  • Oh thanks for noticing Maniac! Wow! 100 posts already? I suppose it's time to let loose my first ! I knew there was a reason I was going out tonight!

I'm having fun. I've even started making some minor contributions here and there. But most importantly, I've made myself enemy with an entire faction I'm really looking forward to the war with the Uni now, I want to see how proper lt. colonels command their forces I will continue to spam for some time to come, have no fear.

I think I'll ask at the bar for some xenobrew tonight.

        • Welcome aboard!

I am just a newbie who likes to hang around asking newbie questions, making silly suggestions and insulting other factions, and they made me Sergeant! So I think it's safe to assume you will be at least Sergeant too

          • yeah - welcome aboard, Modo44

There are some nice commissions coming up soon - the Impact Rover about to come onstream at Santiago Citadel, for one (needs a name) as well as a Southern Theater Commanding Offcer to be based at Minas Tirith (who will command that base plus the one going to be established on the coast to its east)

Plus, we prolly need a Commander fro our growing Transport fleet - the Spartan Non-combatant Craft (SNC Pegasus, SNC Hermes and SNC Mercury)

Lots of opportunities for fancy titles!!

            • Uhm, only trick is, I'd have to give the orders via screenies, 'cause I don't have SMAX. Would that be a problem?

              • Well - at this juncture the titles are more honorific than actual (although as the game grows in complexity, and as we develop different theatres of war, maybe we'll need more direct units & armies' orders.

Right now, Maniac and I both open up the turn, and although (for now) I'm the official turn player. That means I pretty much follow the agreed-upon orders in the relevant trun thread (2149 for the current turn) and I pause and save midgame when decisions need to be made that aren't just routine housekeeping (such as the current one re building the Comand Nexus - use 1 supercrawler and 2 AA's or a supercrawler, a "not so super crawler" and just 1 AA)

But mainly the input from the "Unit Commanders" are along the lines of "Invade the Uni before tackling Morgan" or "Explore the coastline before podpopping" - more macro than micro

But as I say, once we have 30 bases and are fighting a 2-front war with 100 units ir so, more detailed orders may be needed by the turnplayer than just from one other source.

Lack of smax would be a handicap. but not insurmountable given that screenies are relatively easy to do

(did all that make sense - I feel I was awfully long-winded in my reply?)

                • Sure it made sense. Thanks for the clarification.

So, I might get to "command" a 3-unit fleet (the macro scale, for now)? That would be nice. The first order is simple: arm them.

And for the future, I'm trying to get SMAX. Just trying to get it cheap, which means I prolly need to buy it in Poland. Hopefully It'll be here before some personal commanding is required.

                  • Also a welcome from me, recruit Modo!
                    GIMME FOURTY PUSHUPS!!!

Ah good... Finished in under thirty seconds. That's a rather good time. Perhaps we could

make a good Spartan citizen out of you.

As a citizen of the Spartan Federation, let me give you a brief introduction of our current

                    in-game situation.

We are currently at MY 2149 in the game, and are the second most powerful human faction. Due

to our early focus on naval exploration we are the only faction to have already met all

seven human factions. We have used these many contacts to arrange many lucrative tech

trades. As a consequence we are the most technologically advanced faction at the moment.

However because of all this trading our research costs have skyrocketed, meaning we probably

won't research any techs ourselves in the next couple decades.

Our naval superiority combined with a focus on building probes has also given us

infiltration on our three neighbours: the Hive, the University (both AIs), and the

Morganites: a human faction. That still leaves the Peacekeepers (AI), Gaians and Angels

                    (both humans) uninfiltrated.

However we are making plans to infiltrate them as well. As we will soon construct the

Command Nexus and Maritime Control Center, we will soon have high morale probes and the

fastest ships on Chiron, so infiltration should be relatively easy.

Another important event is that in two years, after long preparations we will at last begin

invasion of our eastern neighbur the University. Hopefully this will herald the start of our

                    march toward victory!

In short, this is a very interesting time to be a Spartan, and it keeps getting more and

                    more interesting!

Btw, if you want to have a look at some important threads, check out "the factional

datalinks". The thread could use some updating, but it still contains useful links to

                    important threads to get up-to-date.

Both links to gameplay threads ánd roleplay threads, such as our Phalanx Editorial Office

('The Phalanx' is our newspaper), the story thread and the One Sentence IC Story. Lots of

opportunities to have fun. I hope you will!

                    • Well thank you for the introduction, sir.

There's one question I have. What is the difficulty level of the game?

                      • It's on Transcend - hence our drone management techniques (Maniac's actually - I'm learning as we go)

                        • Ok, so the AI will be moving, not just sitting there. Good, it means better fighting.

I admit I haven't played the Spartans before. Is it very different from the Hive? I never got real problems with drones there, IIRC.

Biggest difference - negative - is lack of Industry for us (we like our expensive weapons). We're at -1 Industry whereas the Hive is at +1

Biggest positive for us is that we start every unit at Disciplined with our +2 Morale (and the Command Nexus will make all new units +4, or Veteran, with running Fundy boosting them to Elite (as would a bioenhancement center plus a visit to a Monolith if ever we change out of Fundy)

Something the Spartans have in common with the Hive (when running Police State) is a positive SE Police rating. This means both factions rely heavily on military units to quell their drones.

It's also much easier to popboom with the Spartans.
