  • I am thinking once it is patched up and an expansion pack is out then it will be time for me to buy a copy. It still suffers from the terrible design decision which is 1UPT but I have been playing since Civ1 was new so I will probably eventually get a copy.

I really just wanted Civ4 with updated graphics.

No sir, I play Call To Power every week, stacks are 9 maximum, no retreat button...you can bombard, however that is your turn for that unit. So in a stack of 9 say you are 4 Artillery, 2 Calvary and 3 Musketeers, once you bombard then you would have to "Unstack" the artillery and attack with only the Calvary and Musketeers.

Do you play CtP 1, or also CtP 2 (as thre may be a difference between both in these regards)

I generally used Bombard from a separate stack.

Maybe I'm remembering CTP2, but I am sure about the retreat option, even if it was many, many years ago.

          • I like it so far. Only played one game on Prince level, made a cultural win.

Pros: Tough strategic choices, districts, cool music, great works, lots of variation, back in the 'just-one-more-turn' groove I've missed for years
Cons: Buggy, no unit stacking, crappy interface, useless civipedia, lots of micromanagent for religions etc, and my biggest problem at this very moment:

            • I think that will only work if one of you sets steam to offline mode.

              • After about a month of playing, I have found a level and strategy that gives me some fun challenge without being frustratingly hard.

On emperor level, I start with only one city, then either focus on founding a religion, or build half a dozen troops. I can then expand by conquering one of my neighbours, especially if they declare surprise war on me instead of the opposite (and yes, they quite often do. Building your 2nd city next door, is a nice way to provoke them.). With 3 archers and 3 spearmen, it's not that hard to fend off any enemy troops and conquer their cities before they build walls. The AI has numeric advantages but is quite stupid in war tactics, so I rarely lose any troops. And while my troops are away in enemy land, my capitol can normally build civilian stuff and also build my 2nd-3rd own city.

Sometimes I can take their capitol, but mostly it becomes to hard without catapults, so I make peace when they have 1-2 cities left. Then I have gained the largest landmass of all players already in BC and can focus on the victory type I want to pursue. I have succeeded in most victory types - domination, cultural, scientific, score and religious. It's normally a close call, but I win more games than I lose.

The secret in religion is to have 1-2 apostles that are specialised in religious wars, don't waste them for spreading, then keep them guarding strategic locations and heal them often. Killing an enemy priest will also spread your religion and remove some of theirs. And yes, it's good found your own religion, because you get a lot of bonuses that are useful in other victory types.

                • I find religion to be totally useless.
I only keep an eye for AIs which might near religious victory.
If there is such an AI I declare war and kill off their apostles and missionaries. (and their armies and cities too)

                  • I've read a lot of contrary reviews and hugely different opinions of the game on here and CFC so would like some advice before shelling out £50.00.

I loved Civ's1 & 2, hated v.3, enjoyed CtP1(only MP as the AI was trash), regarded SMAC/X as ugly graphically but the best economic model, still feel Civ4 was the best strategy world builder game ever but disliked Civ5 so much that I never bothered to finish a game.

Given the above does Civ6 offer anything more than Sean Bean doing the voice-over for the intro?

                    • I have yet to see an enemy air unit. Have moved up to Immortal level now, and also won on that level

The AI is not very good. i remember emperor level being really hard in Civ 3-4, now it's a walk in the park.

                      • I have clocked over 220 hours so far. I love the game and will mod it up how I like it. The one single super advantage it has over all other incarnations is that being 64bit, you can have truly insane sized maps. If you like a long game and want to take the first 200 turns reaching the far side of it like I do then this is the version you want.

Yes the ai is dumb but then again all previous ones were as well and Civ V did not get good till after they released the DLL so modders could fix it (you still hit a memory wall in Civ V).

The framework is there for this to easily be the best incarnation of the game and once we get better modding tools then all bets are off.

                        Cheers!

                          • Currently Civ VI far surpasses Civ IV and V. Its 64 bit! That alone demands acknowledgement it is superior. I cannot tell you how many times Civ V crashes due to being out of memory. I carry 32 gigs and have never had a crash on Civ VI and the maps are FAR larger then Civ V. As regards to game play the ai and feel of the game are better.

There is my opinion. Give it a try.
