I had Transports. Last time I checked, these could traverse the seas safely.

    The map of the world:
Me - Egypt - continent of my own, connected via seas to 3 civs.
Across the ocean - a continent with another 3 civs. Connected via seas to this continent was the 3 civs that coudn't trade.

I was trading with six other civs. If it was a matter of crossing seas only, I would only be trading with 3.

    • Memory Leaks

I can confirm there's some sort of memory leak, and it results in problems with virtual memory after a while. Music replay seems to have some sort of role in this, too. My solution is to save before and after I go to the advisor screens for anything complex. At game load, things seem OK, so if I crash or exit, I can recover and continue.

      My configuration is Win98/simulated Pentium III/Virtual PC/MacOS 9.2.3/ Macintosh PowerBook G4/400.

The music AND sometimes the environmental sounds like birds can create a freeze, I confirm again. I often save my game in Industrial era+++ especially just before I have to make a lot of military ( tanks...) maneuvers.

        • Automated worked: pollution and grouping

The worker is automated by Shift-A to avoid destroying existing terrain improvement.

          1. If the pollution is far awy (on the same continent and connected with railroad/road), the worker ignores it, even though clearing pollution is his top priority.

          2. If there is a worker already clearing pollution, no other worker will be sent there, even though multiple worker together can clear the pollution in a single turn. This is really important since pollution is such a huge problem in civ3.

          3. From 2: The workers never work in groups. It is much better to get road built in 1 square by 2 workers in 1 turn than get 2 road in 2 turns, each by a single worker. This is not really a bug, though.

          • I have several cities building Catapults even though I am using the Governor and their build orders have Artillery units (and all other mil units) set to NEVER build. I am assuming here that Catapults are a form of Artillery.

I haven't read through, if this has been addressed...I believe borders can only be on sea squares. So, they look weird because the border can expand that many spaces, but those are the only sea squares in that range

              • The Americans problem, part 2

As I earlier already reported that selecting the Americans as your civ causes the game to lock up, I have also discovered that being any other civ trying to contact them, causes the game lock up too. As earlier, you can still close the program by pressing Cltr+Alt+Del and selecting Civ III from the list.

I must admit that this problem is more than annoying. Grrrr...

                • A dude posted this about 4 posts earlier in this thread:

                  "Memory Leaks

Well on the Civ LE you get some videos...on one it deals with a programmer who is supposed to be checking for memory leaks...instead he played civ3 all night...shows it wasn't BS!

                  • Capital won't grow

In a couple of games, I have been unable to get my capital to grow past size 6, with plenty of food. At first I thought it was lack of Aqueduct, as I am always slow to get Construction, but I have had other cities reach size 7.

This has happened twice (I've only had the game 4 days). I don't have the know how to get a screen shot of the city screen.

                    • Question fergus................ Is your capital near fresh water (like an inland lake or river?) If it is then it can grow past size 6 without an aqueduct, but if not you will need an aqueduct to get any bigger.

                      • In addition to the documented "hold down B key for infinite range artillery bombardment" bug, I present you with... the Infinite Range Airlift bug!

This bug works the same way as the artillery bug. If you hold down the airlift key "T" while clicking on the map, you can airlift anywhere on the map. If you thought bombarding enemy cities from 20 squares away was cheesy, now you can even unload your entire army next to an enemy's city. Be warned not to use this trick on an occupied square or enemy's city, or the game will crash with an illegal operation.

You need a screenshot capturing program like HyperSnap-DX from Hyperionics. You can capture pics from programs using OpenGL or DirectX (like Civ III) with it too. It's easy to obtain a free one week license for version 3.x of it. Just download it on the website (about 3 Mb?) and fill a short form for obtaining the license immediately. You can always renew that license every week. In exchange you will receive some spam, but you can always register a special e-mail address for receiving those messages, without getting your normal e-mail account stuffed with spam.

                          • Oh, forgot to mention that you can only get those one week licenses for version 3.x, and not the newer 4.x. But that 3.x works well too.

I'm getting the "Clicking the circle to advance from the map setup parameters screen" startup problem.

                                Dell Dimension 8100

Is there anykind of workaround yet?
By the way I have the UK release.
