It sounds to me like what Drachen does is still highly impressive - he can win consistently on Sid, massively reworked starting location or not.

That said, concerning the intent of the poll:

Drachen, what level do you think you could consistently win on if you were using only random maps and stock rules (allow a few reloads in the event of terrible maps... so assume at least an average or garden variety starting loc)?

      Hey Arnelos;

Thanks for your kind words. At this point I must admit to being a one trick pony in that I have learned to survive, thrive, and conquer if I get a decent island start at Sid. In my initial attempts at Sid I was using accelerated production (AP) and felt that AP wasn’t an advantage or disadvantage for either the AI or me. Aeson disagreed and pointed out some things to me. After a bit of testing I adopted his position that AP benefits the human and began using default rules in my Sid games. The trouble is that I had been using AP almost exclusively ever since the feature was introduced. With those settings I can’t recall ever having lost an Emperor game but it doesn’t matter since I wasn’t using standard rules. The picture is further clouded by the fact that there are tribes I’ve never played such as the Zulu. I have no idea if I could win a random deity game if I were dealt the Zulu card. This random start stuff is just not something I’ve tried. Sorry I don’t have a more definitive answer to your question.

Please forgive the multiple posts but I thought a screenshot of my English island might be of use in seeing just how selective my starts have been. My start was upper left near the cattle.

The poll wasn't specific about what type of game situations it was referencing. That's why I specified my statement was refering to average starts. I've recently been trying out some starts on Regent/Monarch where it seems I would lose more than half the time. Waiting until 10AD to found my first city.

I don't see anything wrong with Drachen's claim. He stated the situations he plays on Sid. It's a correct claim and has the proper qualifications. I'd say it's more correct than some of those claims made by CyberShy. (that's a mote, we don't seem to have a beam smiley...)

Some interesting discussion here. My original question was really for information rather than as a criticism, since I'm amazed that anyone can win at Sid most of the time. Still, generated some interesting opinions!

Aeson, care to tell us what are these scenarios you've been cooking up for yourself? Not founding a city until AD and you not being able to beat Regent/Monarch half the time under any conditions seems pretty radical!

I think there was nothing wrong with Drachen claims perse, but it was pointed out that the poll will not reflect caveats. Not that it is a big deal either way. It is just informal and not a matter of life and death.

BTW a disclaimer is maybe in order since the HOF was involved and that is Aeson project.

Well, it's just wandering around until 10AD and then finally founding a city. Most of the losses occur when someone declares war on you before then, and/or you run into Barbs before you get or after you lose protection (Warrior from a hut, or hiding in AI territory).

Expansionist civs are far and away the best at this, as you can sometimes keep up in tech, and almost always get a couple Warriors.

Monarch for me, though I have played one Emperor game, testing the Aztecs and the add worker/Jag rush gambit (highly successfully ). I'm fairly confident that I could move my default level to Emperor with little trouble, but Monarch's got a good, comfortable feel to it for my style and schedule.

Aeson, did you ever play Ascendancy? The reason I ask is some players liked to wait 300 turns before doing anything to give the AI some help.

These 2 levels for me nicely balance the challenge/fun aspect. I can sometimes do well at higher levels, but the game feels more of a chore than enjoyable (gives satisfaction when you do get it right tho!)

                        Never played Ascendancy.

Just that the COTM was at Regent difficulty. I had no desire to play (finishing a C3C game is something that's beyond me at this point), but there were some accusations made in spoilers and I wanted to be familiar with the game in case something needed to be addressed.

My first run through was just with the initial units to scout the landmass, and since I survived until 10AD I figured why not try and see if a comeback was possible. I couldn't play through and submit because I had already been reading the spoilers (which lead to my investigating in the first place) so I tried a few others times on my own maps to see how it works out. (it doesn't consistantly)

I could see it as a fun variant for Chieftain-Regent... with sedentary barbs and Expansionist civs, or no barbs and any civ.

                        Call it the Christian variant.

Yeah, it will take some fiddling to see where the point is that is fun and where it is not all that doable.

I would think 10AD at regent is rough one, but have no idea where it could be a better than even shot.

No barbs may not all that helpful. If you are an expansion civ, your scouts could be out getting some tech, cash and maybe warriors.

Well, everyone welcome the new user, this is my first post (just registered a few minutes ago).

First, what is an HOF game?

I can beat the game on Warlord only. When I started playing the game I completely ignored the manual and the civilopedia (idiot me!) and I didn't even know the importance of a mine early in my playing of Civ3. I made the jump to Warlord early (before I knew most the game mechanics). I hae Chieftain down and I could probably beat warlord next game if I get a good starting position.I mostly have problems with diplomacy/trade/science/income stuff. I've been needing a few tips on this.

If its appropriate in this forum...if anyone has an account on civfanatics I would like to ask a question (will only ask if appropriate for this forum). I think that having an account on both websites would help me improve my skills two-fold, but I ran into some problems that the FAQ didn't answer. Anyway, ya, I can (barely)win on Warlord...

Welcome. Don't feel bad about not using the civilopedia or manual. I never did either.
