what level is the highest you can win most of the time?
Conqueror is right, alexman is one of the best players at this site. While you can out think the AI, (some) humans understand the game mechanics perfectly...
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

I'm gonna add Nathan(Nbarclay), DeepO, Dominae to that list too.

Nice distribution. I voted Monarch, its the first level where the Ai doesn't get hideous bonuses, so my "no tech whoring" rules and my style of play allow me to win there.
Also I have corruption and pollution modded out in the form of giving every building the "reduces" attribute. Made some hp scale changes to.
I remember a discussion in which people were asking why there wasn't more strategy dicussion, I proposed that it was because everyone is modding their game. Some people winning on Monarch difficulty with corruption and pollution will have to struggle more for their win then I will(whack-a-mole pollution and worthless cities beyond a certain point).
as for me I can beat Monarch. For some reason I have never even attempted any higher level. But I have more fun at Regent. It allows me to play fast and loose. And have room for mistakes.
I can beat emperor from just about any start, say except Aeson's little show-off thread.
Deity, I will look for a decent start on this level, nothing special, just decent.
IE: river, one or two shielded grass, a lux within reach (not next to starting position, but close enough to someday get it) and a bonus close to the start (preferably cow )
If I have those, chances are I will win. (normal map, 8 civs)
For me deity isn't really fun though, the wictory is sweeter but the game itself feels more like work than play.

WHAT??? You mean you can actually WIN the game??
I confess that I'm new to C3C, so am still getting used to all of the rules. I do pretty well in chieften, but I haven't finished any games yet !
Oh and, BTW, I am NOT ashamed that I recently got my ASS KICKED, in the Ancient Age, by a Babylon/Portugal Alliance I didn't mind, though, coz after a year of playing civ2 TOT's dumb AI, it was actually a relief to see the AI sides actually commit sufficient forces to my destruction !
Beating sid and diety are easy... Just survive until the industrial age with a mediocre empire. The ai isn't very productive with its factories, so even with its free production bonus you can outproduce them 2-1 or more if you micromanage.
But winning and still having fun? I would say demigod.
