That sounds alot like Forced Labour.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

Don't know anything about Master of Magic. My point, which LC bolsters nicely, was simply that there are times when it's beneficial in Civ to kill your own population.

I've always thought the idea of killing my own population off to be counter-productive but I can see where it may be useful at higher levels (regent+). It would increase production and help keep cities from rioting.

Forced Labour gives a happiness penalty, so it doesn't really help with happiness.

The really evil use of it is to get rid of foreign nationals in conquered cities ASAP.

            Does that penalty go away?

It lasts 20 turns per citizen converted to shields.

I just had a thought...though I don't think this would ever go into a game, and is already somewhat represented by the fact you can sacrifice slave workers and raze towns, why is there so much bad talk about this, and yet nothing was mentioned about the citizen-grinder in Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge? It seemed to pass the PC filter, game-testing, &c. Though I wouldn't want, nor would anyone want, to play as the Nazis and sacrifice 'Jews' (ie slave workers), but perhaps in a scenario where you can only play as the allies it would actually be more of an incentive to beat and absolutely conquer the Nazis, and give a sense of urgency that was present during the historical time of WW2.

                Any thoughts?

I would not feel any particular urgency to prevent fictional Nazis from killing equally fictional Jews, I'm afraid. But it could work as a scoring mechanism - lose X points for each Jew unit destroyed.

we could also put in the rape of nanking. raises soldiers morale . Along with raising the morale of your units, it should also increase the population of the city by one.

                    how's that for sick?

I was a bit puzzled by that too. We certainly don't have it in Britain, and a damned good thing too!

                          And I also don't think that's relevant.

Considering that Nanjing's population fell with about 50%, the effect may have be reconsidered.

What's sick is that was the rule rather than the exception before modern times. Anyway, Civ is way up on the strategic level of simulation. Getting down to the personal level is outside the scope of the game (unless Civ4 becomes something like Sim-Civ ).
