      • Thanks, Rommel. I think Atari's customer service will be my next stop.

          Well, tried all the suggestions at Atari's website. Still no success at launching Conquests after installing the 1.22 patch. So I emailed them with a request of last resort. I asked them if they would mail me a copy of the 1.22 patch on CD. I offered to send a money order or bank check beforehand, to cover postage, handling, their trouble, etc. It's not their fault the phone lines here in the boonies are slower than a snail in molasses.
          Unless someone else has another idea for me to try, I am at their tender mercies. (Oh, the humanity!)

          • I think if it downloaded fine (ie you installed it successfully) then there is very little chance the download is corrupt. Especially true for those that downloaded it twice, from 2 different locations.

            I've seen similar symptoms with the wrong language version of the patch, so check that again.

            One thing to try is to install it fresh to a different directory, then apply the patch prior to 1.22. Check it all works, then apply the 1.22 patch.

            Overall it wouldn't surprise me too much if the patch was insufficiently tested, unfortunately.

            • Well, I'm confident I selected the right language version.
              I tried installing to a different folder, but the setup.exe in Civ3 won't let me install without first uninstalling it in its current folder. No sense in that since I've already tried uninstalling and then reinstalling, including cleaning out all old folders and any remnant files.
              I might try installing 1.15....maybe...naaaaah. What's the point? I already know from these forums that 1.15 is buggy.
              Still waiting to hear from Atari, beyond their form letter response of "Update your Win files .",etc., etc.
              (Did that, told them I did that, I'm not sure they even read through my email before sending their only partially technically correct response.)

              • Unfortunately, 1.22 didn't fix many regular bugs over 1.15. The main bugs fixed were related to PBEM. If you just want to play single-player, 1.15 would be playable. The most important fix is to edit the .ini file to make barbarians wander (NoAIPatrol=0), and this needs to be done for any version of C3C.

                • Man, I feel lucky in that I've had no major problems with any of my 3 Civs!!?? I had bought a new computer and reloaded from my original CD's one at a time. I then downloaded the patches from the Atari site and the games run fine. J
                  ust one small glitch which is probably related to Display properties....every time I load a game the map is kinda garbled at first. But then I just mouse on Map, select Zoom and I'm good to go!

                      "Thanks for your opinion, Dr. Spike. Does your wisdom condescend to explaining *why* I should spend another sleepless night downloading a file, uninstalling all 3 versions of Civ, reinstalling all 3 versions, and then installing said 1.15 patch only to find that the putrid thing won't launch? Hmmmm?
                      In other words, from your experience with the patch, what new features or bugs fixed made it worth the trouble (besides the wandering barbarians, which I can change myself in a tenth of the time.)?
                      Seriously, though, I was contemplating the 1.15 patch. I'm just tired of mucking about with my computer in my scarce leisure time. I want to play a strategy game, not work on my computer. If Atari can't help me do that, I won't buy Civ anymore and find a different strategy game that works out of the box, or at least whose patch is reliable across the spectrum of mainstream computers.

                      • Well it's your choice of course.

                        My reasoning was, that you should (a) be able to play a much more playable version of the game than the release version if an earlier patch worked, and (b) be able to isolate that the 1.22 patch was indeed the problem.

                        You have the patch, you don't need to download it again. Stop exaggerating, it will take you 20 mins tops to carry out my suggestion if you were so inclined. Or not, I don't really care either way..........just trying to help you fulfil your Civ craving.

                          Omitting Multiplayer fixes, these are the major ones listed in 1.22:

                          * Corruption calculation error that resulted in negative effects from the Forbidden Palace is now correct.
                          * Double gold bug is fixed.
                          * Railroads will always appear under captured cities if you have Steam Power.
                          * Secret Police HQ no longer gives corruption OR OCN bonus when player leaves Communism. Fixed error with Government required buildings not turning off once switched from that government.
                          * Greatly improved the ability of Seafaring civs to start near the coast. It should happen most of the time now.
                          * Fixed upgrade all bug (for units that do not have the upgrade ability but are part of the upgrade chain).
                          * Added feminine titles for Despotism, Feudalism, and Fascism (for English default
                          rules only!).
                          * Editor: Added Flavors to the Import dialog.
                          * Corrected display of silk as luxury in city view in Rise of Rome
                          * Corrected Scourge of God splash screen art in Fall of Rome
                          * Build road/fort animations now show for Legionary in Fall of Rome
                          * Cataphract now uses Ancient Cavalry art in Middle Ages
                          * Corrected Mining tech art in Age of Discovery
                          * Optimized main menu code.
                          * Cleaned up INI preferences code
                          * Updated Civilopedia.txt Forbidden Palace to explain that all cities are still affected by distance from the Real Capital.
                          * Updated Civilopedia
                          * Updated PediaIcons.txt
                          * Updated AI Strategies in Conquests: Mesopotamia - Galley (Naval Power), Enkidu Warrior (Offense), Rise of Rome - All legions (Defense OFF), MesoAmerica - Acali & Great Acali (Acali:Unload/Upgrade & Naval Transport, Great Acali (Upgrade Unit OFF), Age of Discovery - Javelin Thrower (Offense), Missionary (Capture, Offense), WWII Pacific - Fighter Bomber (Bombard!)

                          Most of these were already implemented at 1.15. For sure the new corruption/FP model was and the double gold bug was fixed, which are worth it in and of themselves.

                          Just to be clear, none of the patches addresses the wandering barbarians problem- the .ini file must be edited manually for any version of Conquests.

                            • To Dr. Spike, actually I wasn't exagerrating about a sleepless night downloading the 1.15 patch. Did it last night, and it took four hours. Yes, some places in the country have dial-up that make snail mail look fast. (Clocks at an average of 2 KB per second. That's kilobytes. It crawls slower than a slug.) I so can't wait for DSL to become available out here.
                              Anyways, I followed yours, Rommels, and Turner's advice. I tried 1.15, and it actually launched. At least, it started to... before it did a stack dump. Oh well. It was exciting for a little while. It did install though, and I read the readme file for 1.15 before attempting launch.
                              I think my phone lines or the slowness of the transmission itself must be corrupting the files somehow.
                              So once again, I'm begging Atari--or *anybody* -- to sell me a copy of the 1.22 FULL patch on CD. (Maybe I'll stand out by the on ramp with a cardboard sign that says "Will work for 1.22 patch CD.")

                              • Dr. Spike is Right!

                                To make my apology a little more specific, Dr. Spike, you were right about another thing as well.
                                I think that installing the 1.15 patch ruled out that the 1.22 patch is somehow flawed at its point of origin for my drivers or OS. It can't (or at least most probably is not) since the 1.15 would not successfully run either.
                                So, its either my system or my download speed. Thanks for all your help and advice. I didn't mean to appear ungrateful for your advice. I'm just flustered that I can fix many problems on others computers, and often do, but I can't get a simple patch to work for my favorite game. Which means I can't upgrade to Teturkhan's Test of Time 2.0.
                                I need to find another hobby. I caught myself chuckling uncontrollably after my last post about the cardboard sign, and recognized the "laughter of despair." Its so futile its funny now. :: :
                                I just remembered where I heard that laugh; it was the Chief Inspector in the Pink Panther movies, Jacques Clouseau's boss, who slowly went crazy, started chuckling maniacally, and developed that little twitch in his eye!
