I want an Israeli civ too, an I'm an Irish atheist. Not everyone who is familiar with Zionism and would put a after it is necessarily attacking it - I don't know about Ariel Sharon, but I for one am familiar with Zionism and I respect it.

I think Israel would be religious and industrious (all those walls) or possibly militaristic (poor old Philistines!). The Temple of Solomon would need to be a new Wonder of the World too.

The Americans would require a stretch of the imagination, true. But the following would make some sense (pick one based on your mood):

Ancient = G. Washington
Medival = A. Lincoln
Industrial = T. Roosevelt, maybe Taft
Modern = FDR for a hero, maybe LBJ or Reagan for those who are fans of the morally questionable...

As for the Industrial age in Egypt, there was a very influential mufti at the time who sort of inspired what eventually came to be the new-caliphate movement... forget his name now, but with a little research you could find someone.

Now Carthage, that WOULD be hard. Same goes for the Celts, Incas, etc. But it could be done... I think it would be awesome. Especially if each leader had different priorities... but here I'm getting ahead of the game, I think.

I think it would be cool if the GL's that appear in the game could be used as the leader of the entire civ. Each GL would have benefits and disadvantages that it would bring to the civ as leader. When a GL appears in the game, then you have the option to swap him with your current civleader. If you do that, after a period of anarchy, your GL is now civleader and the former civleader becomes a GL.

This is not an entirely new concept - it has been used in Railroad Tycoon where you always have an option to bring in different managers with unique skills to manage your railroad ...

[Yahweh Sabaoth] Ah yes, but Egypt in modern times isn't the same civ as it was in ancient times, is it? Egypt got swallowed up by the Greeks, then the Romans, and then the Muslims. Modern Egypt has no political continuity with ancient Egypt (like just about every country in the Middle East). That's why I think it's funny that their leader is Cleopatra, given that she was essentially a representative of an occupying power who ruled the country *after* the Egyptian civ had been defeated. Civ1 used Rameses II, which made a bit more sense.

I like the idea of somehow simulating internal politics, and the notion of using Great Leaders in doing this is quite intriguing. It might be fun if the Great Leaders themselves took the initiative in trying to seize power, rather than simply being moved around by the player like chess pieces. But I can see how having your units turn on you might be a bit aggravating.
