i think this is a temporary background until they make up something unique
I hope so but doubt it.

      Oi!

You're right. But it still doesn't suggest that this is the ancient Gilgamesh.

          Elden :
It sure is Gilgamesh, but he may not be the ancient Gilgamesh. His clothes indeed look more early medieval than ancient (and Gilgamesh was veeeeery ancient).
We'll know in the future when all pictures of Gilgamesh will be released. Perhaps the medieval Gilgamesh is in full plate ? Or perhaps the ancient Gilgamesh is nearly naked ? We'll know at some point in the future.

Personally, I don't care if the backgrounds are unique or not. I don't even care about them adding any new civs. I want better gameplay and features, dammit!

The background being the Hannibal Ancient Background suggests that he is the Ancient leaderhead.

Sargon was from Akkad, but he ruled over Sumeria for 54 years, which was quite a hefty timespan. And I doubt Akkad was that much culturally different from Sumeria, although they were Semitic peoples.

Considering the liberties they take with other rulers (Joan of Arc, Hannibal), having Sargon as their ruler wouldn't be inappropriate, and it would be recognizing history's first great conqueror. It would seem to me more appropriate than Gilgamesh, who never ruled over all of Sumeria, but was just the king of one city-state.
I certainly agree that Sargon deserves a lot more credit than he gets, since he effectively was the FIRST "great leader," but I'm not really sure it counts. Sure, Akkadia ruled Sumeria, but that's like saying an American president could be the ruler of a Hawaiian civ because Hawaii is presently part of America. Sargon CONQUERED Sumeria, but his larger empire was AKKADIAN.

The primary evidence that the two cultures were fairly distinct is evidenced by the change in the official spoken and written language in Mesopotamia at the time of the Akkadian empire: From earlier Sumerian to Akkadian. Sounds more like Sargon conquered Sumeria and rush-built a few Temples and Libraries.

I'd rather see Akkadia than Sumeria, but we get what we get. Firaxis does apparently listen in when we complain about leaders though. Remember the outcry when Hannibal was listed as "King Hannibal?" I don't remember anyone mentioning anything, but sure enough he was "General Hannibal" in PTW. I doubt they'd actually change their minds about an entire CIV, but you never know. Sumeria was such a piddly little place.

Nakar, it might not have been much, but it was still the "cradle of civilization".

Elden, you may be correct, but then I'd have to ask "Why dress a 2700 BC leader in 900 AD clothing?" I may be shocked and see that you are correct, but I sincerely doubt it.

                          bump

Two new leaderheads are up at Gamespot. One definitely appears to be Incan. I reckon that it is Atahualpa.

The other is a bit harder to place. It appears to show a Polynesian, in my opinion.

The guy with the nice clothes and the headress et al is probably Incan. The guy with the revolting ears is probably Mayan.
