Looking for some help on a Discworld scenario...

  • Quick update

    @ rjm: I haven't got the Monstrous Regiment yet, as I wait for the Paperback edition! So this unit won't be in the first version (unless you can convince me that it has it's place at once and can replace another one... ).

    I now just need to change a few things and retest them myself before needing playtesters:

    1) change tech rate (to slow research a bit)

    2) modifiy tech tree a bit (so that "Philosophy" isn't reached too fast and to obsolete the Great Library at start)

    3) Modify a few things in the vent file so that my "barbarian mercenaries generators" behave the way they should

    4) establish the embassies between countries from the start, as they are no diplo units in the game

    5) tweak a few things in the rules and unit files (nothing big)

    I hope to finish that and do the testing this week...

    • I won't spoil your enjoyment of the book by telling you why you should have a monstrous regiment unit.

      How about Vimes? Nanny Og? Rincewind? Cohen? that god who is a tortoise (whos name escapes me)?

      Are any of them in the scenario?

        Vimes: not as such, but the Ankh-Morpork Civ can develop (after some research) a Watch Officer unit!

        Nanny Og: not as such, but the Ramtop Kingdoms Civ can develop (after some research) a (flying) witch unit! Esme Weatherwax is in, though, as the Ramtop Kingdom
        special unit

        Rincewind: he is the special unit that the Ankh-Morpork Civ can develop (after some research)

        Cohen: not as such, but all the civs can recruit (not build!) Barbarian Heroes (I won't tell you how right now... )

        The Great God OM: he isn't in himself, but one of the civs is Omnia (with Exquisitors, Divine Legion, Deacon Vorbis...) and they can (after some research) build Moving Turtle units

        Hope you like this cast!

        And I think I'll have to write a post describing all the units that we'll make it in the game!

        BTW, are you interested in taking part in the playtest??

          I'm happy to take part in the play test. I'm not a great Diskworld expert although I have read all the books. My daughters can walk you down the streets of Ank Morpork (or the mountains of Ancre) and tell you every incident that took place there. Me I just read the books and move on - I did enjoy monstrous regiment though; it's perhaps the best since small gods (IMO).

            Problem there, as stated in the "Technical Questions" thread... But I'll find a way

            • OK, I still have some problems with the behavior of the barbarian! I'll describe it in the technical question thread! If you're interested, please go and read it there, and comment on it!

              Because of this, I'll need to modify the scen a bit more than expected, but with the added advantage of getting rid of the "disappearance" problem with Dungeon Dimension!

              So, what I'll do is basically: replace the "Nature" civ by the DUngeon Dimension (up to now represented by the barbs), and use the "Other" CIV for the special units at Nature's disposal up to now!

              It should then work fine, hopefully...

              I'll try this this week-end...

              BTW: I found that I might have a spare unit slot, so if someone has a suggestion??

              And if the suggestion is "Monstrous Regiment", you'd better explain...

              • Do you have a librarian unit?

                You could have great fun with the graphics, but I can't think of any special properties - should be something to do with research.

                • No Librarian unit included, because the scen is not only playable by Ankh-Morpork! And as such, this Civ is already "interesting" enough, with more Wonders than the others and the "interesting" production/trade from the city tiles...

                  But then, what would the librarian provide?? Tough one, that...

                  On the other hand, I might use this slot to make an unit that appears once a "Independents" city is taken (Partisan). Any suggestion for that unit? I thought about "Rebel peasants", but I would prefer something that would be more "fun"...

                    Is the Monstrous Regiment a mercenary unit??

                    Because here is what I could do (how do you say that in English: kill 2 birds with 1 stone??? In french it's "d'une pierre 2 coups".

                    So, what if put a Monstrous Regiment unit in the partisan slot and transformed the pop-up text into: "The determined citizens have hired mercenaries from the Monstrous Regiment to retake their city" ??

                    And does the question come back: what should be included in the monstrous regiment unit??

                      I'm afraid that the monstrous regiment is not mercenary. I don't think I'm giving too much away when I tell you that it is composed of women. The main character is pretending to be a man in order to find her brother. You could probably use that idea provided you don't talk about the city hiring them. "the women of the city disguise themselves as men and take to the hills to defend there homeland"?

                      Presumably CMOT Dibbler is out because he is an Ank Morpork character. Have you got a character from Thief of Time? There would be some interesting possibilities with a unit like that.

                        Yes, CMOT himself is out of the game, although his name is use for a tech that'll give access to Capitalization (renamed "Dibbler's Free Enterprise")

                        I could imagine using him to replace the Merchants unit (as any civ has their Dibblers on Discworld! Do you remember the funny description with all the kind of Dibblers from everywhere? The text will be in the Pedia, when I find the time to write it... ), which is my basical caravn unit; for the "freight", I use the Luggage!

                        Or I could use him as a diplo allowed to bribe, and bribe, and bribe...

                        Any other idea??

                          I was thinking of a Thief of Time unit rather than CMOT Dibbler. Something that looks like it is easy meat for yor best aggressive unit and then makes mincemeat of it.

                            Yes, I have a few (1-3) spare techs that I could use to make a path allowing the first to discover the tech to get a few units by events! (or maybe only 1: the Sweeper...) And Monks of Time would be nice units indeed!

                            So, what kind of unit would be good?? Rather offensive or defensive?? and what special abilities??

                            And of course, I then need some graphic for that...
