  • proposed change to our forum

Robert Plomp has suggested a new structure for the Apolyton forums, which includes merging our forum with the remaining Civ2 forum. His suggested structure is here: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?t=189385

I expressed some concern that this could impact our autonomy. My concern is that historically we elect our own mods, and if we are also responsible for hosting and moderating the non-scenario Civ2 stuff, that may add unwanted work on our mods or even undermine our right to select our own moderators. What do people think?

As I said in the main thread, this is getting old.

and if we are also responsible for hosting and moderating the non-scenario Civ2 stuff

If you want to do that, we can discuss this.
But this is not what we intent to.

even undermine our right to select our own moderators

As long as you are able to elect good mods we'll not only accept that, but even be very happy about that.
If you ever would fail to select good mods we would have questions for you anyway.

But I do understand your concerns.
Please also consider ours. We have an inactive civ2 forum, why would we try to keep it up?

This is a suggestion. We haven't decided anything yet.

I can't see any point keeping a Civ2 General forum going with nobody posting in it. Nobody seems to have noticed/cared/commented when the PBEM forum was incorporated into the Scenario League.

I think whats being proposed is more about streamlining the Apolyton site than it is about messing with the Scenario Leagues Autonomy. We run our own affairs without any major hassles and keep the post/visit counters ticking over for the site owners so why would they want to upset the apple cart?

I think we should help them out and let them tidy up the site by allowing the SL to absorb the General Forum.

          That's indeed what we want.
We are not trying to take away autonomy from SL.

It seems that there's not too much objection to the consolidation, provided that we retain the forum title of "Scenario League", and that our autonomy is respected. From what I read, that's not a problem for you Robert, and I'm sure all our members appreciate it.

Having said that, I really agree with Harry Tuttle's point on the other forum, that the key to success for Poly is not eliminating inactive forums, but supporting the active ones. We may not set the record for the most posts in a given month, but we are perhaps the most stable long-term active forum on Apolyton. I've been here 10 years now, and while many friends have drifted away, they've been replaced by new and talented members. We are still going strong - and you would do well to consider how to make us even stronger.

Further to this, I have a couple of suggestions. First, we are a very graphics focused site. People love to post their units and terrain files, and screen shots of their scenarios. So making Gifs, Pngs etc. display on the forum is important to us. Other files, some of which are pretty big, need to be able to be uploaded so they can be downloaded by our members. Perhaps this can be accommodated using the SL site. If the integration between the SL forum and the SL wiki can be strengthened, it's all good. I hope if other SL members have suggestions, they will post them here.

Thanks for showing interest in our community Robert. We do appreciate it.

I suspect there are many lurkers, like myself, who rarely post or even log on, but who do visit the site fairly frequently. Scenario League is a pretty big draw for me. Indeed, it's probably THE reason I still visit Poly.

I may not be much of a modder myself, but as an avid consumer and occasional tester of Civ2 scenarios, it's remarkable how elegant and enduring that system is, compared with many newer, glitzier, but longer and more resource-intensive games. Even if I spend much of what gaming time I have on Civ 4, these days, I always find myself returning to Civ 2, especially when there is a new or updated scenario out there, which is surprisingly frequent.

I guess I don't really understand what the motivation is to shut down less active forums. Is there some technical benefit that I'm missing? Personally, I still find value in having two forums, even if one is fairly quiet. There are still times when I want to go to the main forum and review the strategies and tricks that might be associated with, say, caravan optimization. I fear it would be more difficult to access those, if they were buried in SL; how many stickied threads should one forum have?

Also, I've always viewed SL as a hosted site, so it would seem weird to have it be the only Civ 2 forum, IMHO.

Good points RobRoy. To be fair the General forum is more than just "a little quiet" though, it is completely devoid of life except for the occasional spambot. I think that the Civ2 Scenario League could be the home to all Civ2 discussion, not just scenario development. I can't speak for everyone here but I would be more than happy for people to discuss the finer points of the vanilla game. We have learned a lot over the years from the purists research!

I take it all of the threads from the General forum would be incorporated into the Civ2 Scenario League archives so we could easily make a sticky thread for 'General' topics with a list of links to useful/interesting threads, like the ones you mentioned, to make it easy to find these ancient posts of wisdom. I don't think the Scenario League is so busy that we can't accommodate general posts. Maybe we can find a way to make it clear that the Civ2 Scenario League is for ALL Civ2 discussion.

I can understand Roberts aim of streamlining the site and this will require pruning some dead wood. Multiple Civ2 threads were a good idea in the games hayday, but now they just seem sad and abandoned. I would not want to run a site with dozens of inactive threads. Surely it is much better to merge them into fewer but more active ones? That's just my take on things. I want to see Civ2 soldier on for many more years and any innovations that help this happen are a good thing in my book

I think the site owners need to concentrate on the main site rather than the forums. Somebody makes the point on the main thread for this debate that no-one is going to be attracted to the forums by the rather pathetic state that the main Poly site has degenerated into, whereas CFC is still a relevant fan-site for civ 4 /3 resources.

techumseh, you are totally on the same page as myself here.

I heartily agree with everything above. I appreciate the admin's hard work
in keeping Poly site rolling, and we keep the ethos of CIV2 alive here at SL.
Naturally, culling dead forum areas is wise. I think our forum here is a good
candidate to become basically the main hub for all CIV2 activity on Poly.

We are not a massive horde, but we are the probably the most active group
creating CIV2 content on the net. We are proud of our little workshop here!

                    Just my tuppence.

I think we would also like to have viewable graphics if possible on SL, as techumseh
pointed out, we use many screengrabs and preview of content for scenarios. And if
CIV2 General is merged/archived/baleeted, we could make use of any freed resources.

I think all of Civ2 would work well together, sort of "one-stop shopping" for anyone still interesting.

                              Thanks all for your feedback.
I am now assuming that you guys are ok with merging the Civ2 forum into the CL forum. this means that the CL forum will be leading and for the rest everything will stay as it is.

Please let me know if I'm making the wrong conclusion.
                              Thanks for your cooperation!
