Oh, that's how it's how it's spelled I was wondering if they should be included due to their arrival around 500 AD.

So what do we have now for the Romans?

        Velites?
        Early Infantry? (Hastati/Principes/Triarii)
        Early Legionnaires?
        Roman Cavalry?
        Limitanei? (Meat)
        Legio Palatina? (Infantry)
        Vexillationes Palatinae? (Cavalry)
        Siege Weapons?
Cataphracts? (Could this be a generic unit?)
Yep, sounds good, but at this scale I'd lose the light troops (velites) - no-one will build then anyhow. Have a tech called Marian Reforms as the transition between early legion and Marian legion (you could use the early Imperial unit I posted for this, even though he's 1st C AD. I would include an auxilia unit - adequate defence but poor attack; make 'em cheaper than legions and gives the player a bit of variety. I'll draw pics for this, the later Comitatus legion and the cavalry.

        So that's:

        Early Legion

MARIAN REFORMS ---- Manipular legion (Marian Legion)
        Auxilia

DIOCLETIAN REFORMS--Legio Palatina + Vex. Palatina
        Limitanei

        What do you think?

You might want to let the Romans build Sarmatian heavy cavalry after the 1st Century; maybe award the tech to build 'em after defeating a Sarmatian? Likewise cataphracts after defeating a Parthian cataphract (?)

Well I took a look at the map just now and I do have to say that the second map is more realistic. I am going to edit a bit of it though. I want Europe to be longer and some of the ocean tiles are in some odd spaces. I'm not too keen about making a larger map so I'm going to hem this sucker in a bit.

@Fairline: Looks like a done deal then. I'll make sure the events get put in. I planned to have some Roman use of other troops anyways as they'll make good auxiliary, so the Heavy Cav and Cataphract idea will work out fine.

Alright, I'll post the map again when I make my changes.

Yep - That map looks quite fun - Enough of the Northlands there to keep Rome busy!

                  That's a perfect size Harry

I tweaked it a bit around Britain (added the River Severn, the Pennines and the Fens, tweaked Ireland, Scotland and Wales), the boot of Italy, Sicily, Sardinia, Spain and the S. of France and added the Balearic Islands. See what you think.

Looks good Fairline But hey, is there any reason for that jungle tile in Britain?

Harry - If you can tell me what you ideas are for city/era styles, etc:

I can start on some people GFX for you.

Also I could have a go at some tech epoch GFX too...

Cool. The map stays as it is for now. I'll start placing the major cities.

@Curt: Well I'm using your classical city style right now and I'm pretty happy with it. The Roman, Carthaginian, Egyptian, and Babylonian city styles will work just fine. Though, If you would want to make a Western European/Roman style for the Western Barbs that would be pretty cool.

People graphics would be good too, as well as tech icons.

Would anyone like to tackle a title graphic?

Oops! That was supposed to be marsh - I'm not used to the old civ terrain any more and I never got round to changing the vanilla files

The countryside around the Wash is Fenland or marshland.

They would come in dead handy for the ToT rehash of Justinian as well

I was thinking decayed Roman cities with a few Germanic wooden buildings dotted around Curt, if you're up for it?
