  • EXTERMINATE! - Dalek Tyranny Development!

"You will obey the Daleks or you will be exterminated!"

For a while, I wanted to do something different. A kind of science/fantasy scenario
to escape the lure of WW2 Panzers and Stukas, but could not decide on what exactly...

After watching the BBC's new redux of the classic 'Who' series, my love for the show
had been rekindled. I wanted to do a CIV2 scenario in this setting, and especially
featuring the Time Lord, Doctor Who and his arch-foes, the xenophobic, homicidal Daleks!

Before I go any further, it might be proper to give some background for those poor
souls who have not seen or even heard of this cultural icon of British Sci-fi...

    THE DALEKS:
This is a scenario that features the Daleks - Cyborg aliens from the British Sci-Fi
serial called 'Doctor Who'. Mutants, artificially evolved from a dying, warlike race called the
Kaleds, they were programmed as the ultimate war machine - All emotions apart from hate
had been removed, and these squid-like abominations were housed in advanced 'travel-
machines' - small tanks that were outfitted with deadly weapons and super-armour.

Now, from their barren, radioactive planet, Skaro...The Daleks rule a space empire that
spans vast galactic areas. Their original creator, the crippled and evil genius, Davros,
tries to perfect the Dalek design and to unify these cyborgs under his control. But the
Dalek Empire had grown from his alpha-Daleks, a cadre of cyborgs who felt themselves to
be superior to all creatures, even their originator.

To this end, Davros has went back to the drawing board, and created his own Dalek faction,
the Imperials - created from the cells of deceased Human elites, and loyal only to Davros,
These new cyborgs were the perfect arch-rivals to the Skaro Daleks. Civil war promptly
erupted as both factions considered the other to be genetically inferior. The Skaro Daleks
are commanded by the Dalek Prime, who also calls himself the Dalek Emperor...He was the
first specimen that Davros created, so this mutant's grudge match with the megalomaniac
    Kaled scientist is personal...

    THE DOCTOR:
A renegade extraterrestrial time-traveller, a member of the race known as the Time Lords
from the planet Gallifrey. The Doctor has been exiled for breaching the restrictive rules
of the Time Lord society, their creed forbids interfering with the rest of the universe.

The race of the Time Lords is ancient, and has been time-travelling for many ages in space.
They also can cheat death by regenerating, up to twelve times. As such, the Doctor has had
some varied personalities in the past, as each regeneration makes him appear as a slightly
different person. Originally an irascible and highly irritable character, the Doctor was also
shown to be a man of great intelligence and compassion, who abhorred the evil in the universe
and would always help others if he could.

The Time Lord travels in his spacecraft, called the TARDIS.
(Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space), which is dimensionally transcendental
(larger on the inside than on the outside), and seemingly never fully under his control.
The TARDIS originally had the ability to disguise itself according to its environment,
but became "stuck" in the form of a police box after landing in London in 1963,
and has remained in that shape ever since.

The Doctor is (at the current time in the saga) 900 years old, and his race are held in some
awe by other space civilisations. It would appear now that Gallifrey and Skaro have both been
annihilated in a huge war between the Time Lords and the Daleks. But as it is in 'Doctor Who'
not everything is what it appears at first...

There no potential endgame if both can races can change the flow of events in time.

    The CIV2 GAME:
The scenario will be playable as four different rival factions, and cover events that
take place in a Dalek invasion of Earth in 1963. This is a campaign that I have made
from Doctor Who storylines, and can be assumed to take place in a specific timeline.

The scenario attempts to combine the most fun aspects of the 'Who' series, with Daleks
and other foes, I am hoping to give players a chance to experience a campaign with all
the fun and challenges facing the factions as they struggle to gain supremacy over their
rivals and to subdue the four map areas. Using Test of Time will give the most options to
create the most workable and best-looking representation of this unique science fantasy.

This is what I hope for, and what I hope to deliver.

    PROGRESS:
Where am I at with this project? The good news is that the work is well underway,
and that is why I am opening a thread now...I will most likely be asking for some
help here and there and am always open to suggestions and contributions...!

There are four maps in the game. These can be conquered by foes
and must be defended by thier owners...The game maps include:

*The main battle area in a large city on Earth.
*A Dalek flying saucer belonging to Davros.
*The radioactive Dalek city on Skaro.
*The interior of the Doctor's TARDIS.

The different factions can battle to own any of these maps
once they have access to map travel capabilities, which will
be unlocked by techs and various means. Obviously, once any
faction owns multiple map real estate, this will gain them
much more power, extra prestige and faction rewards.

Only the faction that conquers all maps or at least isolates
their enemies from the battle area can call themselves victor!

    SOUNDS:
The sounds are all gathered, and merely have to be converted to a consistent format.
These will be fun SFX I have found on the net, and contain some classic quotes.

    UNITS:
The units are all done, bar 13 slots, that is where suggestions will be handy!
More bonus units or other 'Who' favourite characters are fully possible. one
unit I need in particular are Ogrons, lumbering mercenaries who serve the Daleks.
I will attempt to make or request these units as time goes on...

    TEXT:
The rules and techs are now being started - This scenario is war-fighting situation,
but research can be conducted too, as the Daleks are super-evolved race. Newer Dalek
chassis designs will be allocated as the player proves his useful nature to Davros
or the Dalek Emperor. More will come on the tech aspect as I flesh it out.

The games files will be sorted out as I move along, and the game/label/pedia info will
be 'Dalekised' to suit the scenario environment...More will be spoken of this in time!

I will chip in soon with more info when I have the maps completed...
This development may take up till and beyond Xmas, but that is the fun of
CIV2 development! I am sure this will be a strategic and unique CIV2 blast...

    .....Exterminate all Humans!!!

      CREDITS:
I should mention that the Daleks were created by writer Terry Nation and BBC designer
Raymond Cusick and were first introduced in 1963 in the second Doctor Who serial.

Units in the scenario are created from the awesome prototypes by Catfish, that really
inspired my to kick of this project! I was so floored that I put all other projects
on hold and put 'Dalek Tyranny' onto the scenario list! Nice one, Catfish!!

Many other units are from genius works by Fairline, and humbly edited by myself.

I know overt showcasing of units and such is a bit frowned upon in the forums,
but what the heck - I want to show what kind of thing to expect, and this is only
a small slice of the overall experience. With sounds and the whole map to conquer,
these screenies are only a prototype of what is to come in a few weeks!

Below: A battlegroup of Dalek drones, led by a Red Commander Dalek and a Black Chief Dalek.

Below: Davros and his personal bodyguard of Imperial Deathsquad Daleks, Transolar Disk and SWDs.

Well Curt I think there isn't a word I can use to describe this project aside from brilliant..... simply brilliant. The backstory of the Dalek's rise and Davros's fall I think will come in very handy in educating the non Doctor who fan's on the forum.

Looks like we're about to face off against the ultimate force of evil in the universe my friends .

Since I have absolutely no idea on the topic (except for the background story that Curt wrote, very educational) I will wait with my comments until I've tested it. Great graphics though!

              Cheers!

Once I get the map completed, the ball is really going to get rolling for this one!

The events in the scenario will give gallons of back story,
and get the player orientated into the world of the Daleks!

              @Sarsstock:
              Hey! Thanks!
If you get the time, I would be awed and honoured if you
could create one of your superb title screens for this one...

No rush though...But it would be the icing on the cake!

Looks wonderful. I've watched Dr. Who off and on for years - esp. the one's starring Tom Baker - and I never understood the background which you have summarized so clearly. Very much looking forward to this one. BTW, check your PM's, Curt.

Any chance of nicking some of the sound files from GTA London? That would be absolutely brilliant!

Very cool! I read the entire Wikipedia article and all the links just because of this. To think, I used to watch this when I was a kid.

Hurray, at last, that eerie music haunts me since childhood

They had a related Flash-arcade game up in the BBC site a while ago, I don't know if it's still there.
That d0rkt0r slipped away in the last level...

I think the Orbital made a modern remix of the old soundtrack too

The flash game on the Beeb website was really nicely made.

                        Blooming hard to complete too!

                          Splendid

I suppose it's too late to suggest multiple maps? A Dr Who scenario is just crying out for different planet settings with the TARDIS as map portal.

As for other units - you have the Cybermen, the Master and Brigadier, right? How about the Sea People and those fellas in the black space suits with heads shaped like eggs What the hell were they called now? Ooh, what about John Pertwee's crappy old car and that silvery flying thing he had. Forget the name of that as well....
