POMARJ Development Thread

This thread is the "resurrection" of the one which disappeared during the Forum crash!

I will put a link to the original one as soon as the lost threads are restored (which should happen someday... )

Just to make it short: POMARJ is a fantasy scenario based on an AD&D campaign I have been playing between 1987 and 1999 (or something like that...). It is about reconquering a peninsula that has been invaded by humanoids (orcs and such) 30 years before!

So if you like orc-bashing, this one is for you!

Update

So I have not been idle since the crash, but as I waited for the restoration, I worked alone in dark my corner...

So here is what has been done:

1) I play-tested my first version of the scenario (for about 100-150 turns); it wasn't too bad, but a few things needed to be adjusted! But the main thing was: the AI behaved exactly like I hoped it would, proving that the scenario theme was viable!

2) After that first test, I started to modify the points I had noticed while playing, mostly about playability (expect some good counter-attacks...) and unit stats (the non-Hero units were nearly useless...).

3) I am now moving the units around in the rules and units files, because I want to provide some sounds with the scen (and now I understand Kobi's comment saying the sounds should be defined from the start, to avoid tedious work thereafter... )

4) and I hope to launch my test of that version this week. The real playtest (if the new version satisfy me...) should be ready in July.

To do list...

And here is what still needs to be done:

1) Write the tech descriptions (but the techs now have their true names, and no longer such things as Dwarves1, Dwarves2, etc...); this won't be as detailed as in Discworld, as it'll be more a useful tool than for flavour...)

2) Write the units, improvements and wonder description: more for flavour

3) Make the necessary small modifications, like turn increment for instance (BTW, where do I need to modify this one?? I forgot...) in the various .txt files

4) Make the last graphical modifications (as soon as Curtsibling and Sarsstock have provided the last units and shields )

5) Find the necessary sounds for the units (I already have a few, but I would need something for Elves and 1 for Dwarves, if anybody has something appropriate...)

6) and all the things I forgot...

Thanks Curt, and now worries: your timing is perfect as I'll finish my sound-related units swapping tomorrow and then launch a new test!


At Justinianum: thanks, but as my scen is nearly finished, I already have all the units (except those I should get this week ) I need!

But I'll check nonetheless, and ask you should I need some other graphics! Thanks for your offer!

That's for sure! I'm in desperate need of units, so I'll eagerly wait for your release of a units.gif file to cannibalize it

It's created for MPG, and the event file will be full, so if the size of that file is a problem, then it won't work! Otherwise, I don't know what the differences are...

But I am sure you know the way I am not allowed to post about...

Units and sounds...

First of all, let's start with a quote from the great Kobayashi:

If you randomly put your units in the unit.gif file, then work on the tech tree and unit prerequisites leaving the sounds till the end – I can almost guarantee you that you will be in for a rude shock and lots of extra work at a later stage. (from "Getting the units right from the beginning" December 2000, Kobayashi).

Well, let's just say I learnt the hard way how true this is...

So now, after 2 major reshuffling (and a few minor ones), my units seem ready to get their dedicated sounds (actually, most are already found, only a few still lacking, like the elves and the dwarves!). I'll probably open a thread to ask for a few sounds I still need...

I'll finish tweaking the saves to correct the last unit swapping, and at the beginning of next week, I'll start what I hope will be my last "alpha-test" (with luck, with some new units from Curt... )...

After that, and some more description writing, it'll be time for Betatest! I hope my fellow betatesters from Discworld can spare me some time for this mighty task...
