  • @MacGalleo: Thanks supremely! You're a life-saver!

@AGRICOLA: Sounds good. I'll post my tentative list in a bit. I have limited time tonight. But thanks for any help!

    • @AGRICOLA: Sorry to take so long.

Here's my working rules file. It has tentative advances and prerequisites considered down to the Electronics slot. The rest are default prerequisites. Any ideas would be helpful.

If anyone else has ideas for advances, or even comments on unit stats, please let me know.

      • Sorry for the delay - real life's been a real hassle lately.

Anyways, I've been looking for a bigger map than what I currently have. I may check out the one Eivind IV posted in that WWII template thread. It may be too big for WWII, but may just be right for a vast, ancient world.

I've decided each turn will be 10 years, and the scenario will run from 4000 BC to to just before AD 1 (thus, 400 turns in all).

Now that everyone knows I'm alive, I'm hoping for feedback on my rules file.

          • Sorry, this got lost among the dirty dishes from the Thanksgiving dinner and the subsequent visit from some frostbitten friends from Canada.

I really have very little to suggest as alternatives to the excellent list of tech names you have made up for the scen. The attachment is a list of your techs with possible alternate names for a few of them.

            • Thank-you, AGRICOLA. I will have a thorough look at this tomorrow.

For now, I'm off to bed.

              • Hello. Sorry for the absense, but once again I've been very busy.

I've finally finished the tech tree and plan to tackle the icons next. Does anyone know of a good stash of icon graphics. I remember having a file that boasted 300 or 500 or something like that of them.

Anyways, I plan to use most of the improvement and wonder slots - as many as I can cover with an ancient or mythological concept.

I should start thinking about events, too - especially divine intervention and how certain unresearchable techs are gained.

When and how many times a year do you celebrate Thanksgiving? Don't you migrate in between Canadian and US versions?

                  • You are right, of course. The Canadian one is in October and the American in November.

I am delighted and very thankful to have two excellent turkey dinners within a month, followed by the Christmas bird, five weeks later.

                    Merry Christmas to all

                    • Sorry about the prolonged absence. The real world's always catching up with me.

Anyhow, I've finished the city improvement list, and am now going on to Wonders. I thought I'd make the first six remain the same. The Great Library may be moved to Isaac Newton's College, however, as it can be disuptive.

I need advice for what to do with the others though. Some ideas include as follows.
-King Richard's Crusade will be some sort of copper mines.
-Sun Tzu's Academy will be the Spartan Krypteia.
-Magellon's Expedition will be Poseidon's Blessing.
-Cure for Cancer will be some "great king" Wonder.
Otherwise, I'm open to advice (including changes to those ones).

I also have considered governments, but just think Democracy will likely be Pantisocracy (in the Athenian model) and Communism will be Divine Mandate. I'm not yet sure what to do about Fundamentalism.

                      Any advice is welcome.

                      • Shouldnt it be "Panisocracy"? (i suppose from Pan (for all, of anything) and iso (equal) ?
It could be from "pantes" though (everyone)

                        • Fundamentalism sounds a lot like the Spartan system. How about Spartanism?

                          • Er... Since the whole Atlantis issue probably originated as a hypothetical juxtaposition of two political systems in Plato's dialogues Timaeus and Critias, you may have to consider that:

                            a) Plato may have invented Atlantis as a political degenerate dystopia where authoritarianism in place of early proto-socialism and the whole priest-king-son-of-god (Poseidon in this case) has gone aufully bad. In the we-are-racially-superior-super-humans-and-will-conquer-all-you-little-people Nazi sort of way. National socialists adopted this Atlantis as a utopia of their own in due time, of course.

                            b) Plato was not a democrat himself. His ideal utopia "Athens 8000 years ago" that saved the world from the Atlantes was an aristoclatic society that segregated its people according to function, in Plato's own work "The Republic". He opposed the democratic system of his day... and rule by the "uneducated masses" (boo!)

                            c) Sparta was actually his real world model for his ideal Athens.

If you go for the Minoan connection with Atlantis, you get a (controversial) rule by women option.

Priest-king personality worship authoritarianism in place of proto-socialism sounds a lot like uncle Joe Stalin too.

Everything that has anything to do with Atlantis seems doomed to be rife with conjecture and hypothesis so do what you like best.

                            • Very fasinating, Tanelorn! I've always thought if Plato were contemporary, they'd commit him. Our modern society's becoming too set in its ways.

Anyways, I've got a tentative list of WoW's done. I now need icon and improvement graphics for Improvements and Wonders. Anyone know where I can turn?
