  • O Sole Mio 1830 A.D.

The year is 1810, and the ppl elect a Rabbit as President. The new leader looks about and tries to devise a plan of action. He is shocked to note that there is now more than one city in the empire!

Situation: We are a Democracy of 6 cities, total population 3.84 MM. Our power is Weak and our reputation Questionable. Current tax program is 50-50-0, which nets 107 GP/turn and 11 turns/tech. There is 701 GP in the treasury.

We have only one embassy (the nearby Japs), as Marco Polo has expired. We are allied with the Russians and English, at war with the Mongols. Currently building a dip, a rifle, and 4 camels. In addition, we have 13 vans on the hoof, and a couple transports vaguely aimed toward Russian lands.

We have Mike's, Shake's, and SOL.

We also have a gathering strike force near Nara (10). This includes 2 engineers, 4 dragoons, and some rifles.

PrezBun decides on a program of happiness and growth, and declares his intention to establish a clearinghouse for diplomatic information, tentative dubbed "Rabbit's International Unity Club." He also sponsors intensive national engineer training program, promises "useful and dignified work" to all who pass.

    1810 (conclusion)
    --Mave sliders to 10-20-70 (19 turns, +2 GP/turn).
--Change build orders to 3 temples, a dip, a rushed camel, and an engineer.
--contact distant English allies. They demand and get Industialization and graciously gift us 200 GP.

    1812
    --English develop Monotheism.
--Japanese and Vikings start United Nations.
--Livy declares us 2nd most advanced civ (Vikes 1st, Japs 3rd).

--Railroad building toward Nara continues. Diplomat activated to aid in transport beside Japanese sentry.
--Caravans move toward transport for trip to Russia. a couple are recalled for use in WoW.

    1814
--Japanese protest our violation of "their" territory outside Nara. We give them some diplomatic mumbo-jumbo while our engineers work feverishly...
--Rushed temples are completed in Funifuni, Gondo, and Ormuz. All start on Engineers.
--Despite several Russian and Viking ships in the area, we load 5 camels onto a transport toward Russ lands.
--Diplomat reports Nara can be bought for "only" 3,780 GP. It is defended by 3 muskets and a frigate, with no barracks or walls.
--Troops are sent on "maneuvers" in fortressed sqare adjacent to Nara (10). Japanese are reassured that all is well and they should sleep soundly knowing their neighbors are "protecting" them...

    1816
    --Russians learn Industrialization.
--Japanese warn that we are in violation of terms of our peace treat with them.
    --Ormuz celebrates.
--Aleppo rushes engineer, starts dragoon. OSM rushes another camel.

    1818
--English get metallurgy from Chinese, sign peace treaty.
--Japs demand we pack up and leave. Treaty renounced, so our fragile democracy falls. japs declare WAR!
--Japs abandon UN, move 3 ironclads into Nara.
    --FF, Gondo complete engineers.
    --Our New Gov't = Democracy.
--We attack and capture Nara (now size 3), gaining 134 GP and learning Atomic Theory.
--Two shipments of Salt delivered to Smolensk (92 + 99 GP).

    1820
--Japanese learn Explosives, reitierate their feeling that, for some reason, we remain at WAR!! Several green meanies commit hari-kiri against our fortified defenders in and around Nara.
--WTPD celebrations return in F-F, Gondoliere, Ormuz, Aleppo. O Sole Mio and Nara join the party.
--We use an eng to found the city of Valencia and allow Ace to be productive.
--Freight to Russians: Wool (d) to Smolensk 187; Gold (d) to Smolensk 324; Wool to Sverdlovsk 123.
--Time to check in with our friends the English. We reluctantly give them Conscriptioh, they gleefully gift us another 200 GP.

    1822
--English learn Democracy, trade conscription to Russians for Atomic theory.
--O Sole Mio now size 27 (max, until we irrigate the remaining tiles).
--Japanese continue their attacks. We do lose a unit. Japanese activity spotted near northern cities.
    --WLT in Ormuz.
--Nara now (4), builds temple, starts ironclad.
    --Camels gather in OSM.

--Japs los partisan, cannon, dragoon to our valiant defenders.

--Begin redeployment of northern troops vs. Japanese menace.

    1828
--Russians develop Communism, start on UN.
--Japanese get metallurgy and peace treaty from Chinese.
--We develop Espionage and our Dips become Spies.
    --OSM Xinning stopped.
--We elect study of the fine art of The Corporation (vs. electricity, Feudalism, Tactics).
--United Nations is build in OSM. PrezBun grouses a bit over its name.

    -----------------------------
    Diplomatic Field Report
    -----------------------------
Russians -- Democracy, 2744 GP, 17 cities, no white techs, studying Tactics
Vikings -- Democracy, 2000 GP, 13 cities, have The Corp, studying Tactics
Chinese -- Republic, 508 GP, 9 cities, studying Conscription
English -- Republic, 2032 GP, 15 cities, studying Communism
Mongols -- Republic, 1505 GP, 9 cities, studying Feudalism

    1830
--Russians now Democracy, trade Chemistry to English for Monotheism
    --Japanese learn Economics.
--Spy reports Edo defended by 4 muskets and city walls (no barracks)
    --Deliveries to Novgorod -- silk (d) 100 GP, salt 71, spice 64.
--All WLT cities now size 8. Sliders moved to 40-40-20, which would net 140 GP/turn and techs every 13 turns.
    ------------------
PrezBun reaches his term limit. His spin doctors issue a Presidential Press Release noting that our civ now has a total of 8 cities (press release says "33% more!"), a treasure of 416 GP ("rich as Croesus" sez the PR), and that our population is now 5.36 MM (PR says "a 40% increase!!"). we also built the United Nations (PR: "WoW!!!!!)

Our Power is now Inadequate (PR says -- "better than ever!!!").
Our Reputation is now Dishonorable (PR notes that "'Honor' is a big part of our reputation!!!!")
    -------------------
Our next ruler should strongly consider a move to a cash economy -- perhaps some Fundy turns to to build and use an army vs. the evil Japanese. Growth is not practical until we can afford aqueducts.

Speaking of the Japanese, it's interesting to note that Kyoto (translation = "nice target") contains both the science wonders.

Also, please note that the Russians have established a city on the SE portion of our continent. I've sent out a spy to find it...

We have several engineers running around, creating infrastructure and intended to ultimately found cities (all except the NONE eng, who we hope will be with us for centuries...)

Not sure, but I think Julius Brenzaida is next...

Looking over the save, I applaud your choices...very balanced developments. Adding to the desirability of Kyoto, that city also is home to Women's Suffering.

I have downloaded the game, but will not be able to play until tuesday evening, if everythings goes fine, or saturday morning if things go their usual messy way.
If someone gets impatient, I would understand. Feel free to jump ahead if you wish to.

Loved The Assualt of Spanish Rifles; excellent example of how combat engineers add value to Rifles and Cannon.

                        Some questions please...
--why build a barracks in Gondo & Nara and then start a market, rather than some unit??
--why are all those guys asleep in fortresses??
--the Russians have Tactics and are allies...why not trade??
--Why a Library in the just captured Kyoto??

These are minor points beside the successful Campaign, but, I wonder.

                          Your questions:
-- Markets and Library: The Barracks were just good to build up an attck force. We won´t need them any more when Osaka falls and we get Sun Tzus (may be a few to heal units). I think we are strong enough now to defeat the Japanese. If I had the choice I would switch back to Democracy for some turns when the Japanese war is settled (or may be sooner now that we have captured Womens Suffrage). This would allow us to grow our cities and resume research. Conscription and Tactics are allready in the game and I think some modern units would be helpful before the end of the game. Markets would pay back in a few turns and help grow the cities. I thought about aqueducts as an alternative. Kyoto has 2 science wonders, therefore a Library. However the choice is still there. Only 20 shields are spent on the Markets and none on the Library. But if we continue building troops in the way I did the last 10 turns going back to Democracy might be difficult. It´s up to Julius to decide.
-- Tactics: because I forgot , you just reminded me of the Cavallery upgrade.
-- Fortresses: IIRC fortifying a unit in a fortress is not additive to the fortress bonus

                          • Zenon,

Okay. I too thought about the Demo/growth angle and I agree that at some future point, after building the infrastructure, that Democracy might be a good way to go/grow for a bit. But there are still nine Japanese cities and I thought that total war footing should prevail. But you may have a better feel for the needed troop strength and more may not be called for now.

BTW, did you think about using the Clad to pick off something to become vet and to reduce Edo, or were you hurrying to get it rehomed??

                            • Monk,

may be 2 or 3 more Cannons (or Cavallery) but more troops would probably not speed up the war against the Japanese. But an interesting strategy would be to pepare a conquest of the Russian Continent as soon as the 3 remaining Japanese cities in the South have fallen. With only one frontier to the East we could do this (under Fundamentalism and with more troops).

The Iron Clad would probably kill itself against Edo. No, I wanted to send it to the ship line. The ship line is unprotected and Russian Frigates and a Viking Iron Clad were showing up. Sooner or later we will have to build some of them. The only problem: only three of our cities have access to the ocean.

                              • Zenon,

The Russians?? Please say why?? Just curious; they are our ally.

And what about the rest of the Japanese cities??

I would think more cannons and spies; cannons since all Japan defenders are vets (Sun Tzu), walls must come down, and the other cities need to be found. Spies are good explorers ( two steps forward, one step back each turn).

I love the multiple viable paths that this game allows, and I am only asking to get your thoughts.
