land tiles only begin to count after you have posessed them for 20 turns! so that could explain why my points jump was not as big as expected.
it also explains why i was constantly ahead early on: by focussing on early culture and wonders my borders grew a few (dozen) turns earlier than yours did...

i have indeed been trading with the vikings. bought a total of 4 techs (calendar, iron working, riding and something else) for the cost of about 6 techs. now i'm ahead by only 2 optional techs. but why do you think we are way ahead? both ragnar and i have few cottages, not many lakes, not many luxury resources (some silk and 1 incense). research could be a lot faster on your continents...
