I think the hope was that the raging barbs would prevent the others from expanding too quickly. Since we were planning more on building up then out we'd have a smaller perimeter to defend. It would also help stymie an early rush by any of our neighbors.
    Exactly.

Since we're going for a specialized civ anyway (narrow but tall) we should seek to get the GW early especially if we have stone.

BTW if we make game speed marathon our fast workers from India would become that much more valuable if we took India.

Actually, wouldn't the fast worker be more valuable in a quick game? In any event, a very solid majority of the teams want normal speed, so it'll be normal.

And it looks like we'll have normal barbs, not raging. I can live with all the settings.

Wait, are we going "narrow but tall"? When did this decision get made? I would say that's not a good idea, especially if we're seriously considering CRE or EXP for traits and courthouses for UBs...

What we discussed in one of the threads is something like "delayed rapid expansion"

(some excellent core cities first, get POP to max, get tech to code of laws, currency etc. and then go REXing untill we drop)

In this scenario we should be able to be one of the top tech civs)..

                    These are the map settings:

Map - MAPMAKER'S CHOICE, something random/special, decent amount of land, not archipelago
                    Wrap - TOROIDAL
Mirrored starts - NO (capital locations are very similar though)
                    Fair/balanced starts - YES
                    Corporations - ON
                    Barbs - ON
                    Speed - NORMAL
                    Huts - OFF
Allow all teams pre-optics contact - YES
Size - Huge (game setting) - In reality something between 80-100 x 40-60
                    Difficulty - Emperor

That was my take. Get our core cities set up, build the national wonders if possible, then REX until we drop.

Is there anything we can do about huts being off? Like can I go over to the CFC thread and start *****ing and moaning and agitating in an attempt to sway people into changing the settings? I believe it was 7-6 so changing one vote would change the decision.

                        • Why do we want huts? Especially on a higher difficulty level it's bad sense given how much more likely barb swarms are - someone can get really screwed over early on by that, and oh the complaining that will continue from that: CFC got MC but I got 5 warriors!!

Yeah, building up first is fine, so long as we do REX before our borders get solidified. It seems like the mapmaker said we'd have "more room than usual", so building up first makes double sense (and triple with toroidal). But there's no reason to keep it that way past CoL/Currency. I've noticed that I tend to REX and grow cities a lot faster than most anyone else, so perhaps I'll let you guys set the pace here, since my approach is middling-good at best by comparison.

Because it's part of the game. If they can't handle negative events then why are they playing? FFS.

                            • It's a matter of fairness and even play, not negative events. And personally I prefer to take my games with less random chance than the "default" and keep them off as well. It's an option in the game setup, you know...

                                Nope, that matter is settled.
