    The True Face of Metal

    Cleopatra laughed.

Those around her jumped nervously, the last month had been tense in Rome. All this talk of religious leaders emerging from Meduia to dominate the world had sent shock waves throughout the Empire, and despair at the stupidity of the Greece who had activitly been spreading Metal in their lands without realising the Metal plot. Indeed if only they had stuck to the treaty of Durango the world would have been saved. But the weeks went by, and there was still no news from the East.

Many in Rome were intrigued, even warm, towards Ozzy's vision of a new world order. Rome was the most invaded country on earth. More nations had declared war on it, out of the blue, unprovoked, than any other country in history. Roman's military had always then won - Rome's enemies always believing their own propoganda and not judging Rome's strength properly - but even so, the years of being invaded weighed heavily on the people. Perhaps this new world order led by the Funglish and Metals could bring peace?

Cleopatra was unconvinced. She had turned away from the old god of Rome and Portugal many years ago during her service in the frumentarii. She had seen too many priests who were really just as money-grabbing, sex-mad and war-mongering as other men to have any faith left. In her heart she knew the Metals were the same, but how quickly would their facade fall?

Cleopatra laughed. Through her laughter the words 'so soon', 'so soon'.

Finally she calmed herself. Shaking her head she explained. "The Metal mask of true religion has falled so quickly. They are not religious men; just men seeking dominanace like all men do. They have so little trust in their own religion, in the power of their god to convince others, in the power of their holiness to draw nations to their leadership, that they are now bribing the Maya to vote for them. Showering gold on the Mayan people in a desparate attempt to buy their favour. And if this is true of the Maya, then who knows what other nations have similarly been bribed and cajoled to pretend to convert to Metal."

Growing angry she continued "Men are so weak, so easily bought, so blind to the exercise of power. I fear the nations of the world will wake up too late to the truth about Metal. Lulled by Ozzy's fine words of peace, while in fact he buys and sells people like the slavers of old, creating a sham of a world-wide religion of peace when it is just the old plans of Meduian dominance of the world, fought with the old weapons of threats and money, shrowded over with talk of religion". She spat on the floor and left.

      Alexandra finally arrived in Rome.

She was immediately brought to Cleopatra, who was buried in thoughts...
Then Cleopatra lift her head and looked at Alexandra and asked: "Why are you so desperate, Alexandra?"

"Mylady, it's Portugal!! Portugal has declared war on us and sent an enormous army towards the city of SAMOS!!"
"The city is well protected, isn't it?" Cleopatra asked.
"It is, mylady, or better: it was! My entire army has fled from the city! It is completely undefended now.....! It will certainly fall next period! No doubt!"

Spartan soldiers are fleeing away from Samos

Portuguese tanks are in front of the gates of Samos.
The Spartan armies did not dare to fight against these modern armors. Weaponry that goes far beyond the outdated defence techniques of the New Spartan armies.

          What now...

First Greece hesitate to hand over Samos or even be willing to talk about it, then their roman masters remain silent in the question. And now protugal tanks at its border??

The Japan ownership of Samos is part of the treaty of Durango-Now i see both Greece and Rome is unwilling to fullfill it .. this is unacceptable!

            Shinichiro,

I am shocked by your blatant attempts to get Samos, despite the agreements Archelaus made with you. Do you think that agreements between Archelaus and you do not hold any value anymore since I became the Queen of Sparta?

May I remind you about the letter you sent to Archelaus yourself:

            Archelaus,

I will think about the fate of Samos, I think we can make an agreement which will leave it in your hand. Japan is no conqueror and has no intention to seize foreign cities especiall not its friends'. However Japan suffered great losses in the previous wars, cities resources.. and Samos is a rich city (in resources) and would greatly help us to fuel our future war efforts. Also would be our source of oil.
            (...)
So what I would like for Samos is something which helps me more (...) Tanks for example.. and giving me an oil or coal resource would be a great start too.
About the treaties: we agree on a mutual defense pact.
Normally these pacts are ending when one party starts a war on its own, this shouldnt, but still it only applies to defensive wars.
            (...)

            Shinchirio
I have blanked out some parts of your message that may hurt your foreign relations with some nations.
Please don't push me to publish these parts as well.

The response of Archelaus to you:

            Shinichiro,

            Thanks for your compromise.
Japan and Greece hold close bounds from the past.
I am defenitely willing to sign a non aggression pact. I'm even willing to sign a mutual defence pact with you, or a single-side defence pact. (where Greece is willing to protect Japan)

            (...)

            Archelaus
Once again some parts of the message have been blanked out for your protection.

I am willing to forgive you your attemts for the sake of the past, the friendship my father had with your predecessors, and for the warm feelings all Spartan people have for the Japanese.

You are not asked to help us against the Portuguese since Archelaus promised this one-sided defence pact to you, but consider this pact to be ended now as well. Your betrayal of the of the Samos deal, especially at the moment that Portuguese tanks are about to enter the city, leaves me no choice.

I will wait for your answer or explanation before I formally end the single-sided defence pact Sparta had with Japan.
Don't make me use the 4 transports near the landbridge to bring 12 modern armors to Japan and 12 modern armors to Piercia.

              My friend Shinichiro,

I am not unwilling to fulfil the treaty of Durango regarding Samos.

You might remember that Rome recently went to war with Sparta because they had not handed over Samos. Rome risked its blood to do this. Please remember this.

Now I hear - only at the same time as you did, I had no prior warning - that Portugal has invaded it. This is grave news to me. For Portugal is the dominant military world power by a sizeable factor, and hold a long land border with Rome. I can assure you Portuguese attack on the Roman Empire - which is what is appears has just happened - is the most serious event in Roman foreign policy since the war of the traitors a millenium ago. it is a more serious event for us that the invasion of Rome by Sata and Alexander.

I am currently demanding explanation from the Portuguese about this invasion. As of yet my generals in the North have reported no invasion of Rome from the North, but I have ordered our forces onto a war footing in their defensive positions to repell the expected imminant attack against the Roman heartlands from Portugal. The world will not have seen a war such as what will take place if Portugal betrays the friendship of millenia and crosses the border. The northern deserts will be transformed into lakes of blood.

I Cleopatra will die fighting before I see a single Roman living under Portuguese lordship.

However, my colleagues in the frumentarii suggest that this may well not be an attack ordered by Vasco, but some local action from the commander of the Portugese in New Portugal. For tehy have good networks in Portugal and had picked up nothing of the preparation or discussion of this attack. In that case, I expect that Vasco will soon bring the local commanders into line, and the Samos incident will be resolved. Of course in any such resolution I will be demanding that Samos is handed over to Japan according to the treaty of Durango.

Please Shinichiro, I assure you I had no prior warning or involvement of this, and war between Portugal and the Roman Empire is a matter of life and death for me. I am demanding answers, and will work for hte return of Samos to its rightful owners Japan.

                Vasco of Portugal,

I have received dire news of Portugese invasion of the Roman Empire in the form of an invasion of the Spartan city of Samos.

I find this incredible given the long relations of peace and friendship between our nations, and the cataclysm which will erupt if there is war between our nations.

I have instructed my chiefs of staff to adopt full war-fighting positions on our northern border, but to avoid making any offensive action. I trust you will do the same and we can find a way of returning from the brink of hell.

Let us meet on a boat in the inland sea which forms much of our northern border, and discuss in person rescuing the world from annihilation.

                  What?? This is outrage!!

Publishing our diplomatic letters? And you cant even comprehend them? what deal are you talking about? we asked for compensations in trade of Samos: forces or money or resources- you gave us nothing of these...the mutual defensive pact was the continuation of the alliance between our people.. which doesnt seem to mean too much to you..

And now you are threatening us? Just who do you think you are?? We had respect for your father but you seems a woman of no honor...

Your modern armor? hah.. You mean Rome's army.. I wonder if they want to participate an invasion against us.. they have the power ofc, but they would gain nothing from that.
But i want explanation for those 24 modern armors which are close to our borders- untill then consider our borders closed with you.

And you say you leave out parts form the letter for our protection.. touching really.. how funny would be if we continued this game and start publishing your letters which could bring you even more disrepute...

                    Cleopatra,

Thank you for your words, we will remain patient and hope for the best. We must warn you though and we do this in open channels that you may make a mistake leaving Alexandra in charge. Your vassal betrayed you once already and it seems they are ready to use their modern armors-which surely was given them by you against us or maybe against you..

We also have to say we find it hard to belive this "Portugal invasion".. it makes no sense... the portugals wouldnt start a war far in the desert when they share borders with their strongest " possible enemy" and ofc they knew that Greece is part of Rome now.

This is a trick.. a lie.. and while i dont know the purpose of it i've alerted our military to be prepared for anything.

                      Shinichiro,

First of all, those are Sparta's own modern armors.
We do possess the knowledge to build and upgrade to Modern Tanks.

2nd, do you claim that the letters I published are a fraud?
Or do you admit that those letters are genuine letters, exchanged between Archelaus and you?

Last: I do not seek war with Japan.
But I want to end this joke. As far as I am aware we are providing you with coal and oil. I will investigate this, if this is not the case I'll deliver it to you immdiately.

Regarding Samos, like I said, it is about to fall to Portugal.
I am willing to agree with you that if we can recapture the city it can be handed over to Japan. We are sick of this city, poisoned with Rockin' ideology anyway.
But only on the terms that you return all but one source of oil that's been delivered by Samos.

I hope that you will stick to your deal this time, that's why I want to sign it in public this time.
The only reason that I am in public publishing your letters to Archelaus is because you also in public accused me and made me look like a liar.

Don't tempt me ever again to invade Japan.
And don't make the mistake to think that Cleopatra won't back me up.
I actually am writing this letter in the office of Cleopatra, we're good friends, don't be deceived by the image the image you think to see.

                          The letters are valid, but
                          1, out of context
2, there is no word about an agreement concerning the fate of Samos.. ofc since there was no such an agreement.
3, you didnt give us oil nor coal- you are selling us coal though.

But what I dont understand: why are you playing with us?
These open letters to Cleopatra were made years after those letters you had published... how can we trust you after this...

                          AND

                          Cleopatra,

We want to hand a very secured and productive Samos to the Japanese.
Our Coal Plant has just been finshed, Sid's Sushi has been brought to Samos, now we're working on a few more city improvements that keep the maintenance low for Japan.

Please have some patience with us here.
And we didnt even wanted Samos.. we thought its not good to separate their citizens from their country.. what we wanted is a good trade but our request for compensation was ignored.

As your generals will report, Rome has taken no offensive action against Portugal despite your declaration of war against Rome (although I could not prevent your aircraft which have been based in Roman cities being ejected by over zealous ground grew).

I am risking much in believing that you too wish to pull us back from the brink of real war, and destruction.
