  • Is there a chance that we may loss Kuno, because we will start without him in HOTW? (still the 1st session aways go slow, so theoretically he should be OK)

It will be great if we start HOTW8 this friday, so lets decide so we can spread out the word, so all players know and are here!

    • I don't think Kuno will drop out if we start without him.

        • Another option, so that we maintain momentum in HOTW8 is to find another slut for HOTW7's final session?

          • That may be totally impossible.
But tuesday evening/nights are the best guess for me. (don't have to work on wednessdays)

Sort of. Ozzy is right. They all get killed. I haven't seen the movie, but just finished a wonderful book called Persian Fire, which details the overall history of the period, and the key battles very well. This one is quite a fight. I think it has to be classified as a victory, because in the overall strategic picture, they delayed the Persians significantly. It also added greatly to the Spartan 'legend'.It was also one of the few periods in Greek history when the Spartans and Athenians allied. Seems they needed either a common enemy - Persia - or a common boss - Alexander.

Another fabulous book on the period, dealing with the inter-city conflict (The Pelopennesian War) is The Tides of War by Steven Pressfield. It is more historical fiction than pure history, but a great read.

              • I would recommend that ppl read Gates of Fire, by far the best book about the battle of Thernopylae. During that period the last thing anybody wanted to do is to came against an angry Spartan hoplite.

                • As a kid in the 60's I saw the movie "300 Spartans" based on the book "Tell Them In Sparta". I loved both.

                  I didn't realise they we re-making it?

Looking back as an adult I think the movie was probably b grade but would love to see the old one again. The scene where the final Spartans die stuck in my mind forever.

Actually - they aren't far off. The Persian Army was immense; and some historians do put it in that range.

                          • To be more realistic the numbers were 7k - 10k (the combined forces of the greeks) vs 150k-250k persians. Just on the very last day Leonidas send back the main Greek force and stayed with his 300 spartains and around 1000 Thespians and made a last stand.
