The UN Press Conference.
Following the stirring remarks made by Zapatero at the special briefing of the Congreso de los Diputados, the Spanish rank-and-file decided that more protection would have to be used to protect Spanish and potentially Chinese interests (remember the attack was targeting the Indian space program, Spain felt it their duty as allies to protect India, and was now lamenting this treaty obligation's failure) from future attacks similar to the ones in Lahore. Zapatero gained popularity among many Spaniards and openly considered a bid for Prime Minister himself, but as of now there were more pressing matters at hand. In a special press conference the day after the funeral in Delhi at the national shrine, Secretary General Javier Solana would address the press...
Madras, India...
Javier Solana nervously approached the podium at the press conference. After a few years in office as Secretary General he had only introduced one resolution, calling for global Freedom of Religion, which failed miserably. He felt that if he was to prove his mettle as Secretary General now was the time to do it.
"Greetings members of the press, foreign statesmen, dignitaries and my distinguished colleagues in the United Nations. As you know on the morning of March 15th an explosive device destroyed a factory owned by the Indian Aerospace Inc., killing at least thirty seven workers, injuring many others, and causing tens of thousands of Gold worth in damage to the facility and the equipment. Nobody has been apprehended, and there are a number of potential candidates behind this attack. We don't know much at this point, but we do know a few things. Firstly we know that the assault was not one of a political nature as no group or nation has taken responsability for the attack. The attack was not violent, and was done at a time that there was a minimal amount of staff present, the culprits may have caused more damage than actually intended as there were stockpiles of sensative materials present in the compound which may have made the explosion worse. Again, this very well may have been known by the culprits at the time. The attack seems to have been a diliberate attempt to stymie the efforts of the IASA to produce a ship capable of interstellar colonization, an accomplishment that would have surely gone down in human history has now been destroyed outright by these villains. While evidence is scant, there seems to be some facts that point in the direction of specific nations. Obviously this is going to require a special session of the Security Council similar to those surrounding the attacks that occured in China and England many years ago. There are many issues to attend to, and I understand you have been waiting a very long time so I will now answer some questions from the floor. Yes, Bill from the United States?"
"Thank you secretary, what are the reasons that the terrorists have chosen a peaceful target like an Aerospace Factory?"
"At this point we have a few leads, and it seems that it was either an attack out of retribution or an attack by a country involved in the race to colonize Alpha Centauri, currently the English, Chinese, Germans and Inca seem to be the only other states with this capability."
"Claudio Marquez, Madrid Monitor, is there currently evidence that points to any of these states?"
"Well, there is actually evidence pointing to at least three of those countries, I don't feel at liberty at this point to name any of them though. I would rather have this done at an official meeting of the Security Council, my main concern at this time is controlling the situation from escalating into a war or even worse; a nuclear situation. I will say though, that one particular piece of evidence points very strongly in the direction of one of these states."
"Yes, Bob Woodward, from the Washington Post; directly following the attack it seems that the Germans demanded that Indian troops leave their territory, why did Germany start hard negotiations with India at the very moment after the explosion?"
"Germany is in a state of flux at this point, they have just got over a change in regime following the rule of a dictator. They may be a bit tense. We have yet to get information out of Germany but that was one of the factors we considered. It is true that the Indians did have a force within Germany at the time, and this could have been a reason for the attack if the Germans were behind it, but again this is only circumstantial evidence and at this point nothing else points to Germany. In fact that have denied any involvement in the incident."
"Tommy Wethingtonshirefield, London Times, you claim that England is a potential suspect, if this charge is serious what evidence do you have towards the English?"
"Obviously any state that has the potential to pull off an act like this is a suspect, the evidence is that scant. However I will say out of all the states on Terra the English have the most evidence stacked against them. I spoke with Vladimir Putin, who used to be the head of the Russian KGB and was their commander when the attacks in China took place. According to him this was the work of a professional with huge financial backing, according to our figures the English could afford such a maneuver especially with help from their allies the Inca."
"So you're saying it was England?"
"I did not say it was England, I simply said at this point they would have the most motive, and the most capability to do so. If you really want me to discuss this further I will. But like I said it is better left to the security council."
"What will happen if more attacks like these will be executed?"
"Unfortunately I would have to say that at this point, it is difficult to tell. Russian and Indian agents rushed to the scene following the blast and found no evidence at all concerning the attackers. As far as we know those behind this act are still at large and should be considered dangerous, at this point they could be literally in any nation and your officials should all be on high alert."
"What device specifically was targeted by the assailtants?"
"I can not tell you at this point, that is classified information and the Indian government does not wish for it to become public knowlege."
"What nations have cooperated thus far in the hunt for these terrorists?"
"I would first like to correct your terminology before I answer that question, and this is something I tried to stress earlier in the press conference. The people of Terra have little to worry about, this seems to have been a professional operation meant only to hit the equipment the factory was producing. The explosion was large but the majority of it was caused by other materials that were on the premises. In fact, the person responsible could have died in the explosion, we just don't know at this point in time. But I just want to stress that the likelihood of this occuring again is very small, and the general public should not worry about it as this attack doesn't appear to be one that wanted a large amount of casualities. But as far as what nations have cooperated; so far the Indians have cooperated, the Russians have cooperated and to a much smaller degree the Spanish have cooperated."
"Considering this act was not done out of violence, but in a strategic way how will the UN react if they discover who has done this? Josef Moeller, Germany."
"Well, I assure you Josef, we WILL find out who is behind this attack, and as I've said we have some sensative information that has been shared with the Indian government, and we already have a few leads. My point earlier was just to say that we are not exactly sure who did it yet, and we are dedicated to finding out who has. We must be sure though, and we want to be especially in an age where a nuclear war is a reality. As far as how the reaction will be, well we have to make sure that the penalty fits the crime not only in the severity, but also the cost."
"Will these nations help India to get on track with it's SS production by sending help from their own engineers?"
"Again, until we judge the extent of the damage in a proper forum, such as the Security Council and see what decision is made at that juncture. From what I can say now though, I am sure the penalty will involve some form of cash and probably equipment itself in some way, shape or form."
"Is a military strike a possibility?"
"Again, it is difficult to say, and once we have all of the information we can determine a response. I don't want to rule anything out, especially considering the militarization that has occured lately throughout Terra. Please, last question."
"What do you say to critics that believe the UN to be ineffective and impotent?"
"Well concerning this issue we just need some time, Delhi wasn't built in a day you know; I mean the United Nations is a cooperative entity, if we don't cooperate we will get nowhere. And I will have you know that last time the UN got the right country, it just turned out that they didn't admit it until much later. This time we will find out who is behind this, and they will answer for their actions. Thank you very much..."
