Who is available for long stints on the computer Australia Day? I would like to progress further some of the many games I have stored on my system, most of which involve Aussie players who should be free on this day. Let us make solid progress on the games.
Hey Trev, I can give you a solid 3 hours, from 9 until 12 Central Australian time. If I had to pick one game, I would like to play our Sunday Afternoon game (the one with Caesar and DD).
"You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.
Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess."
Man I hope you're wrong about that, Ian-I was REALLY enjoying that game and-if neccessary-I believe we should either hand control of those players to the AI or find subs to fill their space. I insist we try and continue that game!!!
But if we play at 9am Aust CST summer time, that will be in your early evening, so at a time you would not normally be working, and therefore should potentially be available. Please make an effort to be available as people do want this game to continue to its completion.
Looks like at least 3 players can make themselves available at about 9am tomorrow, that being deity, aussie_lurker and myself, trying to contact others by various means to see if they can play also.
If I calculate correctly that would be 6pm EST. I wouldn't be available until 8pm EST and from talking to Jon in the past, he only can play on Sat and Sun.
And you still havn't told me what Australia Day is.
Australia Day marks the day that the English discovered and colonized Australia, therefore we celebrate it as the birth of our country. The aboriginal population has a different opinion, and sometimes refer to it as invasion day.
Just off the top of my head Australia Day traditionally marks the anniversary of 26 January, 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip and the First Fleet raised the flag on Australia's first European settlement at Sydney Cove.
After the United States of America won the Revolutionary War in 1783, it was no longer possible for Britain to send unwanted criminals there. As the crime rate increased in England, jails and prison hulks moored in British harbours became overcrowded. Captain Cook had discovered the east coast of Australia in 1770 and not long after this voyage, the possibility of using Australia as a penal colony was considered.
It is believed that this need for a place to "dump" convicts, was not the only reason for colonising Australia. Botany Bay was also seen as a port of call and supply base for British ships traveling the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and trading with China. Although shorter alternative routes were possible, by the mid 1780's, the British Government was concerned that these routes might be cut if the Dutch went to war with Great Britain.
At the same time, Britain was heavily dependent on Baltic countries fro timber that could be used for masts and shipbuilding and flax used for the manufacture of canvas, sailcloth and rope. As possible alliances between French, Dutch and Russians could block the supply of these material, Britain was anxious to find alternative sources. Captain Cook and Sir Joseph Banks recommended that Australia, New Zealand and nearby islands could be potential sources of timber and flax.
On May, 13 1787, eleven ships set out from Portsmouth, England on an eight month voyage to Australia, carrying approximately 1 350 men, women and children.
