Just off the top of my head Australia Day traditionally marks the anniversary of 26 January, 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip and the First Fleet raised the flag on Australia's first European settlement at Sydney Cove.

After the United States of America won the Revolutionary War in 1783, it was no longer possible for Britain to send unwanted criminals there. As the crime rate increased in England, jails and prison hulks moored in British harbours became overcrowded. Captain Cook had discovered the east coast of Australia in 1770 and not long after this voyage, the possibility of using Australia as a penal colony was considered.

It is believed that this need for a place to "dump" convicts, was not the only reason for colonising Australia. Botany Bay was also seen as a port of call and supply base for British ships traveling the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and trading with China. Although shorter alternative routes were possible, by the mid 1780's, the British Government was concerned that these routes might be cut if the Dutch went to war with Great Britain.

At the same time, Britain was heavily dependent on Baltic countries fro timber that could be used for masts and shipbuilding and flax used for the manufacture of canvas, sailcloth and rope. As possible alliances between French, Dutch and Russians could block the supply of these material, Britain was anxious to find alternative sources. Captain Cook and Sir Joseph Banks recommended that Australia, New Zealand and nearby islands could be potential sources of timber and flax.
On May, 13 1787, eleven ships set out from Portsmouth, England on an eight month voyage to Australia, carrying approximately 1 350 men, women and children.
You know far too much about Ozzie history.

When you went to school (assuming you've finished) did your Australian history consist of European Australian History or Aboriginal Australian history or both. I'm asking because I had to do a full year of Aus History year before last and it was all aboriginal history, nothing about europeans arriving or any of that crap.

FYI: Everyone not 'in the know' about Australian history, it's really really boring. We didn't have any interesting wars like in Europe or even a civil war like America. All we got is: Aboriginals lived here and did the same thing with no technological advancement for 50,000 years. Then the 'White Man' arrives and kills a few natives then build stuff. Also a bunch of people died gold mining related deaths (Eureka Stockade I believe).
"You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.
Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess."

    • Sounds alot more humane than European, Asian or North American history.

Either way - I was just curious.

But remember - No one is responsible for an act that thier ancestors committed or was committed against thier ancestors.

You are only responsible for your own actions.

            • Too bad we had to quit that game so early. I know it sounds like sour grapes, but I was just about to make my move on you 2. I had Stone, Pyr, Parth and just got Great Library - I was about to get another GP and 2 settlers in the next 3 turns.

              Oh well maybe next time.

              • Go build your wonders, it does not make a good game, and GP's give a one turn boost mostly, a civ with good cities on well prepared terrain with plenty of cottages, will outdo those wonders and GP's every time.

                          • I don't mean to interrupt your thread here, but I just wanted to see if any of you were available for a game at 23:00 GMT on Friday, I believe in Australia that ranges from around 7 to 10 am Saturday morning, so I know the timing may not be right.

But if any of you want to, you can join the new Diplogame, so far there are eight players and with your support we could get that number up to nine or ten. So if you are interested in a diplogame your help would be greatly appreciated.

France, Germany, Spain, Russia, America, India, and England have been chosen already.

                            Thanks.

                            • An interesting Sunday afternoon match with Blake, myself and deity. As Washington I got off to a good lead, but have suffered the loss of 3 cities to an assault by Arabian camel archers played by Blake. So deity is standing by, steadily increasing his military and waiting to see if he should stay out and benefit or step in if one person gets the upper hand. The initial assault has slowed, but remains to be seen if the American elephants and musketman can drive back the Arabian camel hordes.
