I don't believe there were any graphics modifications in 3.17...

    4 bits is 16 color, yes. 2^4 = 16.

Sounds like graphics card issues, certainly possible something changed in the graphics for 3.17 I suppose...

    I'd consider this:
    1. Try updating your graphics driver.
    2. Try updating DirectX (just in case).
    3. See if changing to 'windowed' mode helps (probably won't, but who knows)
    4. Try changing the options down, as you were going to; particularly, turn of Anti-Aliasing as that often causes issues.

      Thanks.
I never thought that windowed mode would be easier on the graphics, but I can try that too.
I didn't think that the update made a difference, but the timing was odd, so I thought I would ask.
If you hear anything in the future, let me know please.

It's also possible that the timing was just coincidence (unlikely, but possible). Graphics cards do die, after all, and games that are heavy on graphics compared to what the card/chip was made for do it faster...

nm - I figured it out - no problem with the game, obviously it's too complicated for my brain.

Interesting entry. Great depth in the possibilities presented in a short sentence.

              cottages not growing ?

In my BtS game I have a couple of cottages that just won't grow. I'm using free speech - the civic that is supposed to accelerate the development of cottages - hamlet - villages etc. When about to build a cottage it reads : "it turns to a hamlet in 5 turns". Yet I have a couple that have stubbornly remained cottages for more than 100 turns ... Kinda' irritating

I started the game using BtS 3.0 out of the box and then installed 3.17 - it appears no cottage has grown to hamlet after installing 3.17, although a couple of hamlets and villages I had at the point of patching kept developing with 3.17

Has anyone seen this yet ?

I think it's Emancipation that kicks up growth. You can hover your arrow over the tile with the cottage and see how long 'til it grows. Hover again in a couple of turns and if the growth number is shorter by the same number of turns then all is working correctly. That is, if you are working the tiles. If you hover and it says "city must work to ..." then the city is NOT working them and, indeed, they will not grow.

errr ... no ... I should've, right ? It doesn't grow if I don't work the tile ? Shucks ... a cottage is a *****y tile if you are playing financial on archipelago : each coastal tile is 2 food (w/ lighthouse) and 3 ... far better than a cottage ...

Yes but the cottage gets better over time.

                      • Not to confuse things, but that's why the Colossus is not necessarily a good investment if you're financial. If you're working coast tiles you aren't working your cottages.

                        • Colossus main benefit for Fin civs isn't the coastal tiles but the ocean tiles. Ocean tiles normally only produce one gold, but Colossus adds a second allowing Financial to be the 3rd. To get the most out of this you need a massive food surplus and sufficient happiness since you'll also work the coastal tiles before ocean tiles.

                          • Tile reassignment after conquering a city

I've noticed the following, which I consider a bug :

I conquer an AI city which shares some tiles of its fat cross with one of my cities. The tiles get automatically reassigned by the game. If my city was, through higher culture, encroaching on the ex-AI city's fat cross, then some of my city's tiles are grey-ed out and assigned to the newly conquered city. BUT, since this was an AI city, it's in "civil disorder" (revolt) and does not contribute anything to my empire for a certain number of turns. Which means that, for as long as the revolt lasts, my own, productive city is deprived of a number of tiles. If this does not result in a food deficit (with accompanying color change) I might not even notice it.

The algorithm should be tuned so as to not reassign tiles between cities when one of them is in revolt. Let the player manually assign tiles, he'll most probably want to check the new town anyhow once the revolt is quelled

What has happened is that some of those tiles were assigned to your new city for its use once order is restored. Simply go into your "productive" city and reassign those tiles to it by clicking on said tiles within the city screen. You would have had to reassign them either now or once the new city is in order, anyway.

                              • I think he's got a good point... if a different city controlled the tile before the other city was conquered, then that first city should still control the tile and it shouldn't be reallocated to the newly conquered city.
