Actually, if your playing a Protective civ, it's not that bad an idea if you add a Drill II promotion.
And it's actually a good one for the Native Americans if you can get the Tolem Pole & Baracks built fast enough so you start with Drill I (free from protective), Drill II, and Drill III.

...after playing obsessively for months, I only started winning on Warlord level last week (cheers for that walkthrough, Sullla!)
...most of the time I turn the barbarians off, even though the game seems more realistic (and therefore satisfying) with them, but having to constantly rebuild farms and mines is a pain in the arse.
Lucan, a couple spare archers strategically parked on hills/forests will usually draw an attack from barbs before they get around to pillaging anything. If they're coming with axes, you'll need axes to match, but before that, archers do the job nicely.
