I started with Civilization: Call to Power. Then I found Civ II. Didn't like Civ II that much. The interface seemed clunky. It wasn't until Civ 3 that I found these boards and found out CTP was such a bastard child of the series.

The fun part of that was that I found Civ 3 when my darling spouse bought what was perceived as this game, Civilization 3: Play the World. I didn't have the heart to tell the family that it was an expansion pack and not a standalone game. So I went out and quietly got Civ 3 for my self. Been solidly addicted ever since.

Heh. I lurk so much on these boards that, until recently, I still had the rank of Settler, despite having registered back in 2001.

CivI. Started playing it when I was 9 - which means that I've been playing Civ for the majority of my life (on and off, at least!). I remember playing it at home on an EGA graphics card, and it was always a treat to go into my dad's university to play it on with glorious VGA graphics on an enormous 21" monitor! Of course, being young, I had no idea how to play so I ended up founding cities directly next to each other, but it was fun.

I remember that me and my brother changing the intro text with some friends to talk about how the world was created from an ice cream

Now, Civ2 - I spent an entire summer playing that when it came out...

Bought Civ I when it first came out. Played all versions since except ToT and the CtPs. Love strategy and the game is not bad as a history teaching/learning tool. Am definitely a "geezer," born in 1949. Lurked on Apolyton for a long time before joining.

              SMAC and expansion.
They should re-make it with the level of care and technology that's been available for Civ IV.
Which is quite an amazing game, of course.

Civ 1. I can still play the introduction music in my head like it was coming out of a pc speaker, "In the beginning..."

Surprisingly, I discovered Civ at the tender age of 4. Okay, maybe it was 5. My memory from back then is a little fuzzy. I would spend most of my time with my brother and his friends, my brother being 4 years older than me and his friends mostly being 6 years older than me. One day my brother and I went to his friend's house and he was playing a game on the computer. I remember seeing the little drawings of catapults and knights wandering around this map, and thinking it was so cool. Also I would tell him to build more catapults, because they were so cool. We bought the game shortly after, and I spent long days playing. I was never very good, and not much has changed.

I've had several long breaks in my civ experience though. I stopped playing for a while between Civ I and II, but my brother and I split the cost of ToT, and I personally loved the fantasy game and extended game. I was a total nerd about things like that. Then after I began tiring of ToT, my brother borrowed Civ III from a friend. I played a game or two and hated the aspect of colonies and that I actually had to put thought into things. Plus the fact that I kept getting cornered into awful land and falling way behind.

When I began hearing about Civ IV, I decided to look into it, and got it shortly after it was released. After my first game I was hooked again. I've spent the last year or so juggling games between school and work. It was probably not the best idea to start up a game the week of my finals last semester, but I still passed everything with flying colors.

I played Civ 1 in my early teens....played it from an illegal copy :$.....although I love the game, I never was any good at it (I was 12/13 and English isn't my first language). When Civ 2 came out I bought that and played it to death.

I had to skip on Civ III, I wanted to play it, but simply didn't have the time. Took a lot of willpower not to buy it, but I'm glad I didn't.

Got back with Civ IV, which also happens to be the only Civ game of which I bought any expanions.

From the story you can tell that most of us played civ first without having a clue.

"Hi mr AI Armor, I am a spearman! How did you advance that fast?"

"Aaaaaah, when you press 'm' this tile suddenly becomes more productive!"

And eventhough we didn't had a clue, we kept playing the game
Maybe that's the strength of civ (for me at least), it's a game that you don't 'know' if you've only played it 20 times. You can keep on playing, with new strategies, new tips, and even NEW FEATURES because you didn't discover them earlier

I remember when I first discovered the use of the nuke back in the civ1 days
I nuked China on another continent first back into the stone age (literally all cities were nuked back to '1') and then I invaded the island with 20 armors and 40 workers

That was so much easier then landing with 60 armors, only to find yourself surrounded by 200 AI armors

I remember playing civ2 in such a way to get the right advisor movies
If such a feature can return in civ5......
It's stupid eye candy, but it made civ2 come to life. I always prefer it to the palace/throne room stuff. That was mostly turned of pretty quick anyway.

                        "Give me more soldiers!!!!"

I loved it when civ4 gave us back the old civ1 start! "In the beginning the earth was without form and void"
Too bad that it's been removed from Warlords/ BtS!!

Why has it been removed btw?
                        That was GOOD!

Another "geezer" checking in here. I started with Civ 1 on floppy disks on a 286 way back in the dark ages - 1991. Since them I've played 'em all. They are largely responsible for my body learning to go with little or no sleep. To this day, I only sleep in average 4 or 5 hours a night.

Another Civ 1 here. I got a copy from my cousin after visiting them one summer. I can still remember my first game. I played as the Americans, and I built a city around where I live, and was wondering why it wasn't growing. Turns out it was mostly tundra! Good times...
