That's exactly how Civ4 combat works mate. Whole stack, one fights.

      Civ1. Think I had a C128.

Many days of my youth were stolen by Pirates, Civ, and Wasteland.

Once I played MOO II (and CIV II), I never played Ascendancy again.

I did not know that there was a C64 version of CIV. I can't believe I missed that.

I'm afraid we may have to rename apolyton.net into civgeezers.net, according to this poll

Well, first Civ game I played, was Civ2 right after it was released. However, I had no computer at the time and I didn't understand English good enough, so I never got into it. Then, SMAC came, and I was in love with the franchise. I quickly found Civ1 and played for hours and hours. And this was in '98-'99 some time. Soon I found Apolyton, where I followed the last stages of the List and the development of CTP(1 or 2, don't remember, the one that was released in 2000). I skipped both CTP's because of the bad publisity. Borrowed Civ2 from a friend. Played for hours and hours. After half a year or so I registered here at Poly. Got Civ3. Liked it very much, but wasn't as much into it as the earlier initerations.

              Ah, the memories!

CTP was not a version of Civ. It was totally different game that just ripped off the name.

Missing poll option: Civ 1 for SNES.

Yes, there was such a thing and that was my first Civ experience/addiction.

I was first exposed to Civ2:MGE; I guess that was back in 1998. I was 9 then, and it was one of the first PC games I ever bought, along with SimCity 2000... I guess even back then I had good taste.

The first game I played was actually a demo for Alpha Centauri, but I went out and purchased Test of Time first. After playing that for a bit (and loving my first CIVxperience), I got AC and was hooked bad.

Now I've played them all at least for a little while.

It was Civ II for me.

After my uncles got me hooked on Railroad Tycoon, Pirates and NetHack, Civ II was the first game I really branched out to on my own.

My friend and I would take turn playing games and would often work with me playing the first half of the game with him taking over in the second, more "modern" half. Funny thing is that even with the Civ IV expansions out, that's still how things would work if we played together now.

I kinda wish I could choose multiple answers. Because for me it was a combination of Civ2 Vanilla, SMAC, and SMAX.

I recieved a copy of Civilization II in 1996. At first I didn't even know how to move diagonally or build cities. It took a long time for me to get to the point of being able to actually win a game, and I don't remember when I actually accomplished such a feat. I'm pretty sure it was through the space race, though.

When Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri came out in 1999, a good friend of mine (then and now) was the first to introduce it to me. I liked it quite a bit. Once he showed me Alien Crossfire, I managed to cross into the threashold of getting a copy of each. I became fixed on SMAC and its expansion pack (more so Vanilla SMAC). It took playing on a ridiculously huge map for me to finally win at Transcend level in 2005.

I have turned to try out stuff like CtP2, GalCiv, and MoO2 and 3, although I'd generally just seek those to add flavor. Even with Civ2 and SMAC I'd get bored if only playing those all the time.

Months after my first and only transcend victory of 2005, I've managed to embrace Civ4. (I didn't like Civ3 all that much.) Of course, I am eager to witness stuff like the Civ4-SMAC project. Part of me would really like to get back to SMAC (and some mods of such I've seen here like SManiac), although part of me is concerned with spending an hour per turn wielding hundreds of terraformers.

Alright.... I can write a book now.... But let me be short:

Civ1. Although we are not allowed to discuss piracy here, I'll take the chance and admit I got it from a friend on 2 floppy's. It was back in '93 I think, I was 13 (I'm '79-modell). Or maybe one year before, can't remember. My brother and I had gotten our first computer, bought used from my uncle with a printer too. It was a 386 16Mhz with awesome 8MB of RAM.

I think I just got the game as a recommendation from my friend. I was impressed as he had changed the openeing texts to Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and so on. It didn't take a long time before I was a total addict. I even played the game so much that I started to recognize the random generated maps! There is only one game that I remember and that was an old save I sometimes went back to as I had of course gotten a lot better with the time.

I have bought all the Civ-versions from Civ2 and forward with exception of ToT. I got it from a friend to try it and it wasn't long before Civ3 came out (I miss the different levels/ worlds from ToT btw.....) Both Civ1 and 2 I used to play at King without too much trouble, but with 3 and 4 I've been stuck with the medium levels. With Civ3 there is one game other I remember. I had gotten hold of a 256x256 Earth map. I never found it again on the net and for me it was the best ever made (better than Maja's (?) and those popular ones IMO). Anyway, the first Christmas with Civ3 I had brought my computer (then: Athlon 750@812MHZ, 1GB memory, SCSI-drives) to my parents. Played as Germany starting in China. As the map was so huge, the turns took 20-30 minutes and I read Simarillion in between! Unfortunately this was before the patch that corrected the bug when AI tried to build a city in a loop when maximum number had been reached so it ruined my game

And now.... I'm nearly 28, soon married, have a 5,5 months old son and a family car and still am addicted to Civ! The new version of the drug, BtS, make me want to spend long hours again. I even mentioned to my mother yesterday that I was going to relax with some Civ as a new version was just released

                                Damn, I soon have a 15 years anniversary as a Civ-player....
