I remember that ugly: "Our bureaucrats cannot support more cities" popup when you had more then 256 cities in civ1
Stupid bureaucrats! I need more cities!
I sure can't support 257 cities in cv 4.
So 2/3 of you started with civ1, yet it seems many members of Poly talk about being in college, does that mean that many of you started playing in grammar school?
The poll results are very interesting to me. It seems that with each new iteration of the game there are fewer new players, so if the game is still selling well it is due to repeat business rather than new people being brought in.
I believe this is somewhat the same position EA found itself in with SimCity, and at least part of the reason for their change of direction in producing SimCity: Societies. Is that also the same motivation to move Civ to a game console?
Civ I, in 1992 or so.. I remember most relying on Battleships as pretty much the most powerfull unit (except nukes perhaps, but they are 1 time use only) to bombard my way to victory. Except, in civ1 bombarding wasn't in the game yet, so you could lose a Battleship to a phalanx rather easily
I enjoyed civ2 even more though, I played that grey. I also remember that the second expansion pack had a scenario for the pacific WWII. That was an awesome scenario!
Actually I stumbled upon CIV I by accident.
I was looking for a pc-version of the Amiga-game called "Empire" - a simple war-strategy game witch I did not seem to find anywere. It was then a schoolmate recomended Civilization. I gave it a shot - and was very dissapointed at first, since I had not asked for a builder-type game.
However, after playing the game for a while, for years actually, discovering its depth, I slowly developed a deep love toward it.
I have not missed a CIV-game since (except those upgrades witch are solely just multiplayer-versions)
(I never got Empire btw ... and I´m still not even sure wether there actually exists a PC version of that game or not)
I asked to a colleague of my job for a good PC game and he told me about Civ, but he didn't teach me anything about the game. I just got the disks from him and went home.
I started a game, found my first city and did follow the advisor's advices, but without understanding the game nor its goals ! I was very aggressive with the other civs demands and a war started soon. Suddenly, a foreign army came from the dark tiles (I had only one or two units and one city) and my capitol was destroyed. Game over.
I did read the final message and understood that my goal was to build up a civilization that could stand the test of time !!

The poll results may be totally different if it's being done on CFC........

Carpe Diem tamen Memento Mori
I read these great reviews and got Civ 1 for the Atari. Like most people I just jumped in for a flavour, without reading the manual, and couldn't understand what was happening. There was no instant action and not many people or things to move. I was puzzled and just pressed spacebar out of frustration and then there was another small change.
Slowly I began to understand the game. Then with Civ11 it was exciting and exciting advancing through the difficulty levels, beelining to my favourite wonders and maxing the score. I loved building the spaceship.
Next came my great addiction SMACX. Like many, I played every faction at every level and eventually every faction at Ironman/ transcend.
It was then that I ventured on to the forums here and discovered tips etc from the various academies. I mean I played SP SMACX without using the power of crawlers.
I enjoy MP and enjoyed Pbems and diplo games.
So now I have BTS and playing catch up. Playing MP by Pitboss is great but the game tends to end too quickly as people rush to chariots and Catapults.
I haven't tried the MP scenarios yet though.
On the ISDG 2012 team at the heart of CiviLIZation
I was wondering if anyone was going to say the Civilization board game! Like patcon, that was my introduction, tho I suppose Civ I would technically be my introduction to the computer game.
We had a really cool Latin teacher in high school, who for a couple months out of the year had us play this old Civilization board game (this was 1992) to "teach" us about ancient Roman culture. Building up units, expanding your territory, harvesting commerce from your territories to spend on tech advances, and finally clashing against other civilzations in epic stack vs stack battles -- I think everyone here has a good idea of how much fun it was.
Then a few years later in college, I went to a friend's dorm room to watch a movie and his roommate was playing Civ I in the back of the room. I could see the screen from where I was sitting to watch the movie, and I ended up watching him play instead. For me, the similarities to the boardgame were striking. The next day he let me play when he had class and I didn't. It was not long until I had a copy for my own computer; Civ I was the reason for my first all-nighter in college. Civ II was released not too long after I had discovered Civ I, and yes, I failed a course that semester.
My dad showed me civ1 when i was 5-6 Icant remember if i played it. But i remember being 9 when i first played civ2. In my first game i built up a huge navy and launched an atack across a million miles of ocean
But then we got sidetracked into age of empires and i continued with the TBS series myself a few years later. Been killing the AI ever since...
Civ1 and Civ2 are carrying the poll by a combined 79.39%
if you want to stop terrorism; stop participating in it
''Oh,Commissar,if we could put the potatoes in one pile, they would reach the foot of God''.But,replied the commissar,''This is the Soviet Union. There is no God''.''Thats all right'' said the worker,''There are no potatoes''

It is interesting how the first game leaves such a great impression and such a strong tray in memory.
I too remember my first civ-game ever played on Civ I vanilla.
I remember the names of all of my cities and even the locations of them. And also that I built the Great Wall despite having no idea what it was supposed to do.
I also somewhat well remember my first civ II-game I played more than 7 years later, however, not as well as I do remember my first game of Civ I.
I started with the boardgame, myself. I've played most single-player versions of the game since (along with SMAC, MOO2, and CTP2), except for CivIII. If I recall correctly, my first computer introduction to the "4X/TBS genre" was a space game called "Reach for the Stars" on a friend's AppleII GS. Loved the game, but have rarely heard of it since.
I just bought the "Chronicles" pack, so I guess I'll get around to CivIII eventually.
