    Civ I
I originally bought Civ as a package with Lemmings. Played Lemmings for ages before finally trying the more "complicated" game on the disc. Then we were hooked! My girlfriend & I both played into the night (seperately) and through to the next morning. we even booked days off of work in order to play late night sessions. Seem to remember there was a lot of detailed work to do on Civ I & II that was very time consuming. Caravans were annoyingly 50 shields each so every city that produced 7 shields you had to remember to give it at least one turn at 8 (but not more) in order not to waste the production (Production didnt carry over onto the next project as it does now) Remember the first space victory which graphically was quite dissapointing (dont think we loaded all the right options when installing) and we even bought a new computer with advanced processing power (OK it was a 386) and extra memory (8k) in order to play Civ II effectively.

Civ III was a bit short (well, a lot short) to the target many player had in their minds.

"The List" raised the bar too much, IMHO, while Firaxis had so many trouble with developers team that the game was less than expected and disappointed many players that left the series.

I suppose not many players started with Civ III and still are here around to fill the poll!

        Funny really.

In some way, civ 3 had it all, and still it's the one I played the least of all 4.

Another Civ1. I had to give up Civ for a while because I was tired of 3 and my computer couldn't run 4. So now that I've bought a new computer I immediately went out and bought Civ 4.

I am an unabashedly addicted newbie, CivAnon here I come. Not long after I started dating my (now) husband, I found out he was sort of a computer game junkie. Well, that nearly ended the relationship for me, I do not do these complicated computer games, I am more of a Yahoo puzzle gamer. However, seeking to gain my approval he decided to teach me how to play some of his favorite games (this is actually a really good idea). He started out with simple ones like Pharaoh and Pirates and moved onto Civ III but I hated Civ III. Being a first time gamer I had no idea how to micromanage everything, it looked ridiculous and I was bored out of my mind. In the meantime my boyfriend was spouting about how the new version was coming out. Wanting to still spend time with him, I opted to sit and watch him play his new favorite game. The more I learned, the more I liked it. So I started playing and we have been fighting over the CD ever since. So it was Civ IV for me, but hey, it's not a bad start for a newbie like me.

              Civ1: those were the days!

I had a friend in university show it to me. We played a few all-night, co-operative games. Then I got my own copy and bought the strategy guide in order to learn all the intricacies. The Civ1 strategy guide taught me the game well enough that Civ2 MGE was a cakewalk when it came out.

Who remembers the "galley land bridge"? Set a bunch of transport-type ships exactly max-movement from each other and they just pick up the unit that was on a different one and carry it their movement range. Move an entire army from one end of the ocean to the other in one turn.

                Me.

Civ1: first by watching a friend play it and not do anything besides pump out units, which eventually got pummeled by tanks, then by buying it myself and actually doing stuff. I had the version on 4x floppies (at least one of which is now corrupted, unfortunately), which had two bugs I remember: all your movement points were restored when you loaded a saved game, and cities built before railroads never had their city square upgraded to railroads (so moving through it cost 2/3 movement points). I played quite a bit of that, sending bombers around the world with several saves/reloads, then moved onto CivII, which I played for a long time in high school. I won a copy of CTP I, which I played a decent amount, then got SMAC, which I played a ton, and am now thinking about getting CivIV.

I've been around here a while, although I haven't posted in years. Some might remember me from being a wacky creationist (I am not anymore, at least I have learned a ton since my naive debating days on Apolyton). I'm interested to see what my registration date is... Apparently I traveled back in time to register, as my birth year is 1984!

Yep, I remember that one. :-)

One that I also remember, that wound up being a spoiler, was the "speedy-settler" trick. You set the settler to, say irrigate, and then wake it and set it again and again until it finishes (4 cycles later?) in the same turn! It was cool at first, and then I had to stop because it was such a crazy advantage against the AI.

                    • My friends and I played "Civilizations the board game" for years before CIV1 came out.

I'll trade you 2 salt and 1 wheat and oh yeah that extra card is civil discord.

Urgh. I remember this. i had to stop cause it made me crazy. it just took the fun out of it.

strange that noone has mentioned colonization. i played that again and again and again. even recently. it is truly superb. strange thing by the way. i cant play civ3 (hate it), civ2 gets boring too fast (overplayed it I guess), but I can always play civ1 and colonization... (though I dont, but I could, but I dont... cause of BtS)

                        • Discovered Civilisation 1 as a young fella.

The whole family (mum, dad, and my sisters) got hooked on Civilisation 2.

                          I dabbled with Civ 3.

And Civilisation 4 stole my soul.

We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

                            • Civilization II is the first one I played.. It was a WW2 scenario I enjoyed most in that game, good thing BtS has a scenario like that too

                              • Colonization is actually one of my favorites from the series, Lz. The problem is it won't run on VISTA no matter what you do and barely runs on XP if you use voodoo.

I really, really would like them to come out with a new VISTA/XP version of Colonization. That would make me a happy demon.
