[Edit]: my guess is that if it were rats, or some other animal that is not cute we would not see this same level of enthusiasism for commiting genocide. Unfortuantely, "Save the Rat Day" doesn't get much fan-faire
    1) rats are often a plague. whales are not

    2) they don't need to kill them. everything a whale can offer we can make ourselves synthetically.

but the response was indeed a bit "impassoined"

Exactly that, they are an endangered species, and do not need to be slaughtered to extinction as they offer nothing that can not be produced by other means.

As mentioned above, but I do apollogizse for being over the top in my post. Hope I did not offend to many people.

In fact the rich, upper classes in my own country are also barbaric, as they like to openly slaughter foxes as a fun day out with the kids. They even smear the dead foxes blood on their young childs face as a barbaric act of ritual. Even though it is now illegal.

The current government ignores this illegal practice as the top officials including the PM etc get paid back handers - to ignore it.

65 years ago, our leaders were calling the Japanese a plague, too.

Perhaps in another 65 years we'll be overrun with whales.

Puppies aren't endangered either, but I'm guessing that if I began slaughtering puppies no one on here would be saying..."well I'm not angered by that, because there is plenty of puppies now whales on the other hand!"

My point by making that statement was that you would never hear an impassioned statement like the one you mentioned if the animal weren't cute or interesting. What is being done to the whales is an awful thing and should be stopped, but it is worth mentioning the hipocracy of many so called "animal lovers"

Back on topic here, with all the people talking about barbarians and such, a fun expansion idea would be that if/when a barbarian city or set of cities grows large enough, it becomes a true civilization. Figure that eventually, even a group of barbarians would become civilized if they don't get wiped out. What one civilization calls "barbarians" another may call a mighty but technically backward civilization.

Targonis, Hephmod (at CFC) does that.
HEPHMOD BEYOND v 1.0 BETA C for BtS 3.19 Released! *** HephMod is a mod-pack that emphasizes historical flavor and realism within the bounds of smooth and challenging gameplay. To this end, HephMod's guiding principle is, "More is not always better." I try to keep feature creep to a minimum...

It does that among other things. Doesn't do Blake's Better AI at this time, though.

Back in the days of earlier civ (Civ 2 maybe), when the barbarians were at your city gates they would demand tribute to avoid attack. You could either choose to give them the money in return for safety or say "Bring it on!"

Now the option of bribing the barbs to attack your enemy as a proxy wasn't there, but is a very cool thought. You would need some way of contacting them. Ooh-ooh! A new mission for missionaries. Missionaries can move into a tile containing a barbarian unit and attempt to "convert" them to your side.

Just like how the Visigoths had already converted to Arian Christianity BEFORE they sacked Rome.

Looks like someone else was watching "The Barbarians II" on the History channel yesterday.

Yep. But knew that already from undergrad days. The Goths went Arian back in their Tervingi/Greutingi days, if I remember correctly.

To be honest, it was just on in the background while I played Civ -- good show though. Wish History Channel would go hi-def already.

I hear whale is a fine delicacy.

It would be interesting to piece together all of the little tidbits that have been dropped here and at CFC on the expansion. We know very little, but a few interesting details have come out here and there.
