Time to throw myself into the fire here.

America should be in Civ. most cultures that have been considered world powers since 4000 B.C. are in, and America happens to be one right now (and has been for some time).

Other examples in the game would be Egypt, Persia, Greece, Rome, Arabia, China, Mongolia, Spain, France, England, and Russia. The Incans and Mayans can be included for the pre-Columbian new world.

Egypt was a great civilization for thousands of years, Mongolia for around 100. Each spread their influence differently (through religion, arts, or warfare), but they still made a mark. This includes America today, no matter what anyone thinks of their policies or their influence.

If anyone really doesn't like America in civ, you can change the code so they don't ever show up or destroy them with Praetorians when you meet them. I personally use Immortals.

I know someone will have a rebuttal, but I just needed to rant.

    • That's true. And what it really comes down to, people, is that Firaxis and Civilization had to appeal to the masses, and it just so happens that there are many Americans who buy the game.

      Business standpoint: America =

Must be nice to have a ready-made scapegoat so you don't have to come up with cogent, vaild arguments.

And I don't remember calling anyone evil, so please don't put words in my mouth.

Sorry but this has like four pet peeves of mine at one time.
          1) Anyone can sue anybody for anything. Whether you'll win or loose is a different story.

          2) The lawsuit wasn't that McDonalds was making their coffee too hot, it was that they were not abiding by Department of Health codes saying hot beverages were to be kept under 140F. And admitted that they were violating health codes... in court.

          3) The government doesn't just wander around seizing random peoples assets because they have nothing else to do on a Thursday. Yes, they make mistakes but they are the exception. Of how many people that get taxed, how many are audited? Of the ones that are audited, how many are found deficient? Of the ones found deficient, how many are truely innocent? I think you'll find this last number quite a bit smaller than the first.

          4) If the government left itself open to lawsuits it couldn't run. You'd have every Happy Harry Hard-on with a grudge suing them twice a day. And three times on Sunday. Sad that to protect itself from the people it must rape the people. But then, if we lived in a perfectly rational world we wouldn't need government.

If they didn't keep the coffee under 140F, doesn't that mean they were making it too hot?

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

                  • I think America SHOULD be in Civ. Aztecs and Incans too.
But what about Mali (???-I found out about is when I started to play Civ, but maybe it is great...). And warlords Civs: Celts, and Zulus... Africans are maybe good (Zulus are like RSA, and Mali is the 3rd Civ of Africa...). But Celts? Yeah, they were good too... But as I said on apolyton twice: There should be more Civs... For example Polish Civ (in time of 200 years it was top 3 powerfull and large in Europe...). But not only this, there are about eight Civs, that are not in Civ, and I am sad about it ...

But my opinion about USA is that they SHOULD be... They absolutely changed world's history, although they are so young. They are the Rome of the present... I know the Middle East nations don't like USA too much (without Judaism), so I won't tell any more about them, but all the Civs: Arabia, USA, Persia, Ottomans are good for me, and they SHOULD be in Civ... And I am thinking if Israel Civ should be in Civ, but I don't know the opinion of players... There are real many Civs, that should be, and I'll tell you sth: THE MORE CIVS THE BETTER ...

There's a surprise. Whether you are or are not a 'nationalist', an Irish nationalist, a Republican or just the common or garden Irish American with a chip on their shoulder, is irrelevant as to the accuracy of your statements about the United Kingdom and Eire having been at war when they joined the E.E.C. or whether they have been at war for over 100 years.

I speak as the offspring of two Roman Catholic Irish citizens, brought up in the Republican tradition with a grandfather who witnessed the Easter Rising, just in case you think I'm some kind of Little Englander with an axe to grind.

No, I'm not confusing anybody. I'm just not that picayune with my definition of "war".

I'm not being petty, but thanks for the implicit insult.

If you assert that the states of Eire and the United Kingdom are or have been at war, then that does actually have a meaning, in international law as well as in Standard English.

You may choose to be mercurial or inconsistent with your personal definitions of war, but that really doesn't interest me.

I'm sure you feel the U.S.A. was never at war in Vietnam or Korea... and the war in Iraq is years over.
What a pile of crap. I don't feel, nor have I stated, anything of the sort.

OK, just because England says it's over doesn't mean it's over.
Oh my, but if the government of the Irish Free State says it too, does that count ?

Anglo-Irish Treaty Formal negotiations begin in October and an agreement is eventually signed on December 6, 1921.

The 26 southern counties will become an independent Irish Free State while the six northern counties will remain part of the UK. The treaty sets up a boundary commission to draw the dividing line according to local wishes.

                      Treaty approved

The Dail Eireann votes 64-57 in January 1922 to accept the treaty after a bitter debate in which those backing the deal are accused of treachery.

You are going to have to work hard to convince me that the 75 seats (of the 105 seat parliment) controlled by Sinn Fein were planning on voting for Unionism.
I'm not going to have to do anything of the sort. You're the one with the convincing to do. Convince me that you're not just recycling mouldy old uninformed rhetoric. you're starting with a big deficit so far.

What you call terrorists some called the legitimate Parliment of Southern Ireland.
                      Hilarious! Who exactly ?

Which inhabitants of Eire elected the Irish Republican Army to fight for reunification on their behalf after the Treaty establishing the Free State ?

Really, you shouldn't spout inflammatory uninformed nonsense.

But were they terrorists or freedom fighters?

It depends on what side you are fighting.
No it doesn't. If you use terror to intimidate civilians you are a terrorist.

You might do well to read and learn an awful lot more about the creation of the Irish Free State and the ensuing Irish Civil War before commenting inaccurately on recent Anglo-Irish relations.
Vive la liberte. Noor Inayat Khan, Dachau.
