We were badly prepared for 9-11, We badly planed for the Iraqi invasion (I think we should've invading Iran in the first place), and we were badly prepared for Katrina (even though it was on FEMA's top 3 worst possible disasters list).

I think we have now gone way off-topic.
Oh, wait. I've been discussing the EU for almost a week and now that you have to talk bad about the U.S. (there are more Americas than just ours) now we're getting off-topic?

This thread has been off-topic almost since it's inception.

And if that's the best "U.S. did wrong" stuff you've got... your patriotism is blind. Between our economy, our security, our foriegn policy, and our loss of civil liberties; 9-11 and Katrina are the best you could come up with?

    Dude, that's blind patriotism.

      • I think part of the problem is the way the games uses the term "civilization".

America, Egypt, China, etc are really all cultures. Each of the represented cultures encapsulates differing styles of living at different stages of history.

I think the original civ conveyed that the best in the intro sequence, which can be seen in Civ4, but most people skip it these days. The last two slides indicate you need "...to build a CIVILIZATION!". The game is about taking a particular culture and building a civilization out of it, not choosing a civilization to control.

So in this case the whole discussion of if "potential civilization" A,B or C should or should not be included in the game is invalid, as it is acceptable to say that all "potential civilizations" in the game are valid cultures, or "ways of life" if you will.

        • A solid 4th of the tech tree is courtesy of the United States. I think that by itself warrants a place in civ, n'est pas? Also, the whole game concept of settlers seems to make the most sense in the context of America fillin up her West (sorry Israeli settlers).

Also, you can't just use your 21st century ideas of civilization in deciding who made the most impact in history and so on. Even if the Sumerians could probably beat the ass out of the Zulu, doesn't mean the Zulu are any less worthy... or maybe it does

But also just relax a bit. Who cares? I think its fun as hell to settle and make your major cities Tenochtitlan, Texcoco and Huitzapoltan.

          • America is an empire. Don't deny it.

By the way, Canadians, if you can spend your time critisizing America, what's so great about YOUR country?

That's the problem with everyone who critisizes America. They say, "Oh, America sucks, death to democracy, it's corrupt, blah blah blah," and then you offer them citizenship, and they foam at the mouth for the opportunity.

            • You'd never catch me getting a US citizenship, thanks. I'm not going to list what's great about Canada because I don't need to. We're like that as a nation, not about tooting our own horns. We have plenty to be proud of, but we're satisfied with just enjoying it rather than shoving it down the rest of the worlds throat.

Why isn't this thread locked/moved yet?

I could provide you with a list, but IMO, the best part about being Canadian is that we aren't so insecure as that we need to start rah-rah* threads like this one. I have traveled quite a bit, seen a few places, and I like where I live. If others don't agree, that's their problem, not mine.

@Martinus - good one, but I prefer Samuel Johnson: "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."

                • I have lived in Ottawa, Winnepeg, Toronto, and Newfoundland over the years, and while they are nice places to live in, I like my home just fine.

The point is, stop criticizing our country, because we don't criticize yours.

and Era, don't fall for Dis's troll, he's quite experienced with it.

And finally Mods should not have to be present for people to act civil to each other.

Save the fighting for the battlefield.

                          • This is a very new discussion, I have never seen that topic before and sincerely wonder, why nobody thought of it earlier.

Of course America should not be in. Option 2 is it.

I don't have a valid reason for that other than to annoy the OP, though. I hope that is not illegal.

I don't want it closed 'cause we're not civil...

I want it closed 'cause it's silly.

But there are even sillier threads out there so I see no reason to shut this one down for that reason.
