In my opinion, using the first Great General for a single unit is the way to go. Because Heroic Epic now requires level 5 units, it would take a long time if you try to generate them through combat. But with 1 Warlord, you have a level 6 unit instantly (which also guarantees the West Point in the future). Heroic Epic is not expensive and provides DOUBLE military productions. Besides the ability to build HE, the level 6 unit is a monster on the battlefield!
