So you did play AOE2 and civ2 mp at roughly the same time, back and forth, right?Originally posted by StarLightDeath
...Then in 1999 Civ2Mp came out and that was the first game I really played MP and I did that for 6 years on and off. I spent 3 years as number 1 in civ2 MP. Then I moved on to Age of Empires 2 and I played that for about 4 years and I played it pretty regularly up until the past year when I started to get bored. In AOC I was a top 5 player in the US. While I don't play many different games, the 1 game I play at the time I become very good at...

John-SJ,
I think the Civilization games were made that way for the reason that most people really do like exploration and variety. If that wasn't the case, they would have changed the game model after all of these years. But it never stops working for me, most at Apolyton, and apparently for the makers of Civilization as well. It's the most fun strategy game, and I've played a lot of them including SMAC, and RTS games like AOE and all of it's versions, Caesar III, Pharoahs, Rome Total War. Civ rules over them all.
On edit: How could I forget the CTP series and some of the nice mods done for them (Hexagonian/Dale's Diplomacy Mod IIRC). Somehow I think I'll be playing Civ for many more years.

yuck
This thread has been smelling bad for a long time.
And SLD, a youngster and an amateur, thinks chess is boring but thinks he is a gamer.
Ha ha ha ha ha. Anybody who is so totally contemptuous and ignorant of chess is certain to be easily defeated at any strategy game.
SLD, all your claims of glory: I don't believe you. I had already won tens of thousands of games of every kind on the day you were born. You give new meaning to "clueless noob."
But I hope this continues, because it is amusing. How does it feel, being the consistent butt of ridicule? He he.

First of all, I'm glad you think being a "gamer" a really long time gives you some sort of ground to stand on.
Spoken like a true chess snob and a true geek. I can't help but laugh at the mental image that statement just conjured. As for not believing me, go ask anyone on Age of empires 2: The Conquerors who __DriXnaK__ is. Go ask anyone who EyesOfNight is in Civ2 and look at www.myleague.com/civ4players for EyesOfNight. That aside however, I believe in results not talk. You should have no problem playing me 1v1 in Civ4 so just name a time. The fact that you are a lawyer only further adds to my disdain for you. You are the lowest of scum in life.Anybody who is so totally contemptuous and ignorant of chess is certain to be easily defeated at any strategy game.
Being an attorney, you should know best. How does it feel, being the consistent butt of ridicule?
By the way, this game is all about rushing, the ultimate strategy of RTS games. As you can see everyone moves at once and the game was designed to allow players to destroy the economy more...again, a principle used in RTS games. Don't let me tell you though, just look on the back of the box to see Firaxis tout the RTS features themselves.

Hmmm...you are seriously confusing me here. Firstly you are not a geek...then continue puffing out your virtual chest about how great you are playing videogames ?Originally posted by StarLightDeath

At least be consistent.
Secondly the designers actually point out features that are similar to the latest RTS games. One of those is not in fact "real time" play.
Lastly, I imagine you'll find the group of gamers I play with extraordinarily strange then. We turn off all win conditions and I do mean ALL. Its about the game you see not the win.
I ,and they, do the winning out in the world. But hey! you enjoy the "victories"
I'm not paranoid I KNOW they're watching me

I don't like this comparison with RTS. It's a marketing ploy, and an influence on the interface, but nothing more.
SLD might have some personal problems (who doesn't?) but one thing is for sure: he really is stupid, arrogant and exceptionally ignorant.
Any thread with him in it degenerates, threads he starts define ``waste of time,'' and his posts are piled so high with crap that there is little use even replying.
We can all see what his problem is: he is a munchkin. Pure and simple. The type who wanted to play D&D, and thought roleplaying was what you did when you pretended to be a legendary hero with amazing equipment---before even playing your first session. The type who likes to find loopholes in game mechanics and exploit them, continually. When he can't win, and can't find a loophole he whines about it. There's no sense in debating his points: he will always be correct, because there must be something intrinsically flawed if he can't find the exploit that always allows him to win.
People say that CIV is worse in terms of military than other games. But I say it is much better. No longer can you go with a plan from the outset, and have minor adaptations and tweaks. You must roll with the punches. Just like in many games, the opponent or the environment may throw you a curve ball. SLD sits there and takes it, whining on the forums. But a real strategist assesses the situation and adopts a new (contingency) plan.
That is strategy, and it is paramount in CIV due to the immense number of interesting decisions, and the multitude of factors that affect the optimality of each path. Finally, there are several paths, many ways to success. Which is the best? Work it out! Develop a strategy. Just be ready to change it after one more turn.

First of all, I don't say how great I am at playing video games, I say how great I am at Civilization and to a lesser extent at AOE. The difference is that I do this for my own amusement, not because I desire your recognition or praise. Compare me to Velociryx or FriedPsitalon...two people who actually care about their reputation and bask in the praise they recieve. I don't care about any of you, the minute you cease to amuse me is the minute I stop coming on here. So why don't you shut the **** up and stop ruining my troll huh? I already got one idiot who's dumb enough to play me if he wants to stick up for his little "gamer's reputation" so unless you too want to join in then go preach to someone else. This is why I do this. I do this for morons like Cordelayne who feed me a line like the chess line and open the door to a whole host of things I can do. You like playing with your friends wasting time playing some little peace lover game...well **** you I don't enjoy that. I hate all of you and I want to make sure you know that. This is my duty in life you see, and were I to become derelict in this duty a great calamity could befall the Earth. So you see, I do this not for myself, but for the scores of people around the Earth relying on me for their salvation. Do you see how important this is now? Do you understand why I do what I do?
