i'm surprised noone mentioned "mount rushmore is a fascist wonder"

i believe, like whaling boats with optics, it is the timing which combines the two things. why should calendar centre your world map you could say. optics i a tech afaik between calendar and compass... so after basic knowledge of the world mechanics and more sophisticated boating...

for me some of the civic names are slightly WTF. eg. why should burocracy increase productivity?
and why are some of the civics mutually exclusive...

(to answer myself: game variables... some classic era civics are still interesting in the late game)

To be quite frank, I don't think there is a simple more monumental example of a fascist-like personality cult than Mount Rushmore. I mean, come on, you have faces of your elected presidents sculpted into a ****ing mountain. It's to nationalism what pyramids were to god-pharaoh's rule.

In any case, you can see it the same way as UN being a Communism-enabled wonder in previous Civs and Mass Media-one now. It does not mean that it represents the ideology of communism or tv, but it means that about time people invent communism or TV (or fascism in case of Mount Rushmore) they also have ideas about constructing such things.

american imperialism around the time mt. rushmore was built wasnt very far from fascism.

something like - america has a god-given right to civilize and ruler the lesser peoples of the earth yaddayaddayadda...

for me the worst WTF is that you have virtually no chance of ever getting a deal with another civ which has its own different early state religion. the '-3' from heathen religion already makes open borders impossible, but also tech and resource trading. i guess if you gift them shìtloads of stuff they might like you, but otherwise...???

That's not my experience. I had very good dealings with Russia in my last game, despite them being Christian and me Judaistic (they used to be Judaistic before for some time though).

Anyway, if you play on smaller maps with a number of civs below 10, I strongly recommend reducing the number of religions in game to no more than 3-4 (you can do it, for example, by setting the future tech as a tech to found some religions). This imo greatly improves this part of the game, as no longer it is the case that everybody has his or her own religion and hates everybody else, but rather you have actual religious blocks forming and sending your missionaries to a neighbouring civ before another religion-founder does it plays a very important part in getting them on your side.

Since I normally choose my opponents from among Spain, Russia, England, France, Germany, US and Arabia, I have left only Judaism, Christianity and Islam in game, but your mileage may vary.

christian isn't an early religion. by then you can already have had historical relations. as you said they were judaistic like you earlier... in that time you already traded.

no, i mean more the extreme cases of buddhism, hinduism and a little bit also judaism. most these religions are founded before open borders are even possible. and in my last 2 games my border deal was cancelled as soon as they had their own religion...

I went WTF at how radically different this game is from 3. I knew there would be new stuff, but I'm a little overwhelmed at how this one does not play at all the same.

Most of the other things that bother me are adaptation issues.

Yup, that's why I disabled early religions, and left only Judaism, Christianity and Islam - much better that way.

In Assets -> Xml -> GameInfo folder find a file that has "religions" in its name and open it with wordpad. You will have prerequisites for various religions - I just set Future Tech as a prerequisite for those religions I didn't want in. You could try toying with setting nothing there (this way they will never be founded, even with Future Tech) but this could have an effect of actually founding them at the game beginning so who knows.

My biggest WTF is with the 'Convert' and 'Adopt' options.

The only people I can bully into accepting my state religion, or my choice of civics, are ones who already like me, and in the case of creligion those who already have enough worshippers.

Why can't I bully people into taking on my state religion? You want me to give you Rifiling and Liberalism? Fine, but only if you convert to XYZ and denounce Slavery.

And, on a related note, the bifurcation between per-turn and immediate trade goods. Why can't I tie my supplying a civ with Oil with their being allied with me against the Spanish?
