  • Things that made you go WTF?

Seriously, I love the game, and I am a full supporter of the game's giving gameplay the precedence over historicqal accuracy, HOWEVER, there are certain elements that made me

-Optics gives you...WHALEBOATS??? Primitive tribes were hunting whales in paddle-powered canoes without any knowedge of light refraction whatsoever.

-Biology lets you irrigate without a fresh water source...Again, don't see the connection.

-As, has already been pointed out, Catherine the great was nowhere near as attractive as she is portraited in the game. She looked more like this:

Will post more once I'm home, but I'd like to hear your guys' moments.

P.S: No "OMG an archer destroyed my stack of twelve panzers and gunboats" stories...They're too obvious, and we've all them!

This is like the 3rd post I read about Catherine's look. Ease off holmes!

Just because she BECOMES old doesn't mean she was always ugly. Jesus man.

Also she had a very um active social life for anyone else complaining about Catherine's conversations.

The personification is great, and she is a fascinating historical character, don't get me wrong, but the Catherine in the game looks nothing like the young Catherine in real life.

Actually, she looks much, much, MUCH better.

Now, mind you, the concept of female beauty may have been radically different in Catherine's age and place when compared to ours. Now the same "wow, she's pretty" effect has to be created in an entirely different world, so I don't think it's unjustified to "tweak" her appearance a bit. Quoth Wikipedia, "she was considered quite beautiful in the standards of the day".

This actually makes sense if you think about it.

Oh, yeah, that reminds me of my biggest WTF moment so far. When locked in a war with the Aztecs, once when the Aztec army was attacking my stack, suddenly the unit that was under attack or was attacking started running across the screen, not the be seen again. The unit didn't go anywhere, but the animation showed it gliding across the screen over its edge. Weirdest graphics bug ever?

                  Optics and whaleboats, yeah, weird.

The first time I met Catherine, I think she had the hots for me. I was Roosevelt, guess she has a thing for older men.

Most of my "WTF's" are losing battles there's no way I should have lost, given the units involved...

You don't need an alphabet for writing. The ancient Egyptians used symbols and before them cavemen communicated their ideas through painting.

The thing that really annoys me about Civ4 is that I can't choose the traits of my leader when customising my civ, or better yet take random traits which spices up the game considerably!

I can imagine Firaxis DIDN'T do that on purpose. Imagine how abusive Industrious/Philo can be.

I am fairly certain that you can set "Random Traits" in a custom game, but I have not done so yet.

Early writing was the use of symbols to denote things. Alphabet is a system of symbols to denote sounds. Writing existed long before the Canaanites developed the alphabet, whose descendant the alphabet I'm using right now is. It was really a strike of genius to figure out that you could use symbols to represent the different sounds in a word and then use those symbols in groups to represent words.
