YES! This is definitely what we want. I'll be replacing the gospel choir with it asap!

Well, since christianity may be the most influencive religion to culture and civilization on this earth that's not really a strange decision.
Does this include the 1.3 billion Buddhists in China alone? I think you may want to review those assertions.
And in fact Judaism is the source for christianity, so one might say that Judaism is the most influencive religion / culture. Islam ie. spawns from judaism/christianity.
I'm not sure you could say Islam spawned from Christianity. It came much later (around 622 CE) and is among the youngest religions in the world today (I think Mormanism, founded in 1830 CE, is the youngest).
But Islam was founded by Muhammed out of revalations from "the angel Gabriel", not as an extention of Crstianity (as, say, the Mormon religion was).
Also, mostly Islam does not teach that Jesus was a diety. They view that as a form of polytheism and teach that he was simply a prophet, like Muhammed.
That's already 3.2 billion people on the current world
Are you talking about religious people? 'Cause last I heard there were about 6 billion people on the earth.
But, if you are lumping Judaism, Islam, and ALL of Christianity, that number shouldn't be surprising. You're looking at basically 1.2B Hindus in India, 1.7B Buddhists in China it's no surprise that the people left mostly belong to the religions left.

resurrecting this thread, because i'm playing into modern era again, and i've realized that the music is still limited to classical arrangements. i think this is a disappointment. surely, some jazz, blues, or rock could have made its way into the game?

um, where did you get the idea that every person in today's china is a buddhist? even before the religion was discouraged/surpressed post-PRC, i doubt even half of the country would have identified themselves as buddhist.

Check out this thread if you haven't yet. We're discussing how music can be added to the default soundtrack.

OK.
I have no realistic way of afirming or discrediting this. Any census taken is surely tainted by the government and I seriously doubt anyone would go to those lengths for no reason. All We really have is anecdotal evidence and that's hardly empirical.
So, no one in China is Budhist anymore. Works for me.

it's not about numbers/figures somehow being "tainted" by the current government or not. it's simply that buddhism in china reached its peak in the tang dynasty (600-900 CE). from song dynasty (960-1279) onwards confucianism (much of which is hard to even classify as "religion" in the western sense by the way it was practiced) grew to become the primary influence. by the time the manchu qing dynasty was overthrown in the early 20th century, practicing buddhists and daoists were in no way the dominant cultural or philosophical trends any longer.
Genesis is the same in the Bible, the Torah, and the Quran.
So, which religion is it? Hmm?
You do realise that the first five books of the Bible are the same in all three religions, don't you?

Let's see... Which religion is oldest? What people is it that those books tell the story about? And what religion was it that came to existence from that people?

Umm, how do I phrase this...
OK.
Fine by me.
I don't know anything about the spread of religion in China and that wasn't my point. My point was that arguments about the spread of religion are fruitless since it's difficult to even tell where a religion ends a cult begins or a "following" (like cunfucianism) falls.
It's all too "mushy" to form a valid, cohesive argument.
Hence the rebuttal of "Christianity is the most influential religion on the planet". That's a goofy statement, in my opinion, because it's like saying 1 billion is a big number. Yes, under certain circumstances but no under others and it's positivly miniscule under some conditions. It's a baseless assertion.
As far as Budhists in China, I don't really care. It was an example (a bad one but give me a break) I didn't think I'd have to defend it as a solid scientific hypothesis. I only needed it long enough to prove a point.

I think we're on the same page, I find religious arguments ridiculous. By there very nature they have no basis in fact and are, therefore, impossible to argue. Yet people keep doing it.

It's not the same in the Quran. The Quran re-tells a lot of the first 5 books, but it's in an abbreviated form (the Quran is much shorter than the Bible) and there are major differences.

Oh. I was going off a blurb from a Discovery channel special on banned books from the bible. They mentioned, in passing that they were "the same". How "same" is left up to the individual, I guess.
Number of followers aside, christianity is of course the most influential religion on earth. All the rich countries are christian countries, save for Japan. The world is ruled by christians. It's sad but true.
Christianity is of course, like all religions, an artifact from an ignorant past. But it's still going strong. Nietzsche was wrong, alas.

But China is the new rising star. Already their GNP is number four, they just found out last week that they underestimated it by 17%. IIRC, that took them from 6th to 4th in GNP. In another 20-30 years, their GNP will be bigger than the the U.S.

Probably just ahead of his time a few hundred years. In Europe, he's not that far off. Not everyone is as smart as Nietzche.
