[q=Ozymandous]Civ3, IMHO, was head's and shoulders above SMAC as far as gameplay.[/q]
 Perhaps, but I got pissed off at the uber-aggressive AI, who would build cities everywhere, in every crack in my borders.
And the lack of fluff just left me cold.
I played CivIII perhaps 4-5 times before I put it down for good. SMAC I played far, far, far more. Part of that is the greater fluff, which really draws me into the game, and the other part is the story, which is difficult to do in a Civ game.
As for the sales, the Civ name is worth more than a new Alpha Centauri name. It's far more sellable and later games will sell more simply because of greater computer proliferation.
