  • Unique Units

This thread is an attempt to see what each civ's unique unit will be. Here are my thoughts. Any other ideas?

    Americans: F-15/16? Minuteman?
    Arabs: Camel Archer
    Aztecs: Jaguar or Eagle Warrior
Babylonians: Bowman (blah), maybe a cool horse or chariot archer
Chinese: Please not the "Rider" again. Hopefully the Chu-Ko-Nu or Sheng-chu'an
    Egyptians: War Chariot
English: Some Kind of Ship (Man-of-War?)
French: Royal Musketeer or Old Guard (I don't want to see the term "Musketman" in the game, please!)
Germans: Panzer or Teutonic Knight or ...?
Indians: Not War Elephants, I don't think. Any ideas?
    Japanese: Samurai
    Malinese: Heaven only knows...
    Mongols: Keshik or Mangudai
    Persians: Immortal
    Romans: Praetorian Guard or Legion
    Russians: Cossack? MiG? Strelets? Boyar?
    Spanish: Conquistador

Germans will keep the panzer, I hope!!!
Man-o-war is a waste of resources. And will be out of date before you can say "man-o-War".
Conquistador sucks, because shows up too late to be useful.

Musketeer for everyone and Royal Musketeer for France:

      Thanks.

Oh, and I hope the Age of Enlightenment lasts a little bit longer so that the Man-of-War, Conquistador, etc. have more prolonged usefulness.

The man-O-war being out bof date so quickly is sad. The age of sail lasted hundreds of years, but by the time you have frigates built they're practicly obsolete. Civ III just skipped right over the line of battle ships that the english built one of the world's greatest empires with.

With the inseption of the discovery of sail turns should encompass less years to highlight an interesting time in history.

Defined ages are out, so maybe they'll be more useful, or possibly less

Possibly less? How so? If you focus on one particular part of the tech tree?

We had a discussion some time ago on the Civ 3 forums about Malian units:

Knights -- Armored in mail. The horses would be wearing padded barding. The decoration on the command figure should naturally include a great deal of gold. Riders usually wore flowing robes, similar to Berber styles. Sundiata is described as having led his troops wearing a white robe and turban. Any self-respecting leader would be accompanied by a griot, a West African bard, probably carrying a lute-like instrument.
                      and

Although rare, horsemen as icon have existed for 1000 years in Mali. Some would depict a hogon, the supreme officeholder, a semi-divine leader of great wisdom, or even a mythological emissary from a distant land.

Aside from the fact that most UU's aren't unique....

For the Americans, how about a commando UU such as Navy Seals or Delta Force.

I have found that the F-15 UU was quite useless. Of course this still puts the UU out of reach until the later stages, but would definitely be more useful than the F-15.

For the French, I'd like to see an improved knight unit (chevalier) instead of muskets.

I'd be inclined to give the Spaniards a tercio in lieu of the conquistador.

Why shouldn't the Indians have war elephants?
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?
