Well, this seals the fate of Civ IV for me.

I will, regretfully, be unable to run the game. I have a notebook computer with a Pentium IV 1.6GHz processor and 256 megabytes of RAM. So far so good, but my graphics card (SiS 650 - one of those integrated with the mother board) does not support T&L as I painfully found out when I unsuccessfully tried to run Knights of the Old Republic and the Knights of the Old Republic II that I bought simultaneously.

Of course, buying a new computer is out of the question...

Yeah, integrated video cards suck .

Maybe you will be able to run the game, technically. Some games run with less of what is their minimal requirements - I don't think Civ4 will just refuse to run, although it will probably look like crap.

Thanks for the sympathy. Both of the KOTOR games outright refused to run - due to the lack of hardware transform and lighting capability. If it was just that I had a worse processor or lower RAM than necessary the game would probably still run though slowly, but the lack of T&L capability that appears to be necessary makes it exceedingly unlikely.

Don't a lot of laptops have integrated video cards? Meaning Firaxis is sealing off an entire market for them?

Yes, I would say most notebooks have integrated video cards. On the other hand, I would guess that most gamers have access to desktops which is probably why Firaxis is not too worried.

Most gamers do have access to desktops, but many also like to play on laptops, as we can see here on Apolyton, too. For instance, when travelling between home and work or elsewhere, playing Civ can be nice. Or at a conference . However, yes, since integrated video cards don't do it, most laptop users won't be running Civ4 apparently.

                  Firaxis.

Is requiring T&L a basic design decision that was made long ago and can't be changed, or is there hope that a special laptop installation could be included?

Perhaps "Does you computer have T&L?" or "Do you often play Civ on a laptop?" could be good questions for one of Locutus' weekly surveys?

No notebooks, eh? So much for playing on the train. They might as well just wait and release it only for PS3 and X-Box 360.

Does someone now a FAQ -or specs link for nvidia GeForce4 graphic cards? Trying to find out if T&L is supported on my card, but can't find the info.

I think I'll change my mind about buying a cheap laptop for playing Civ at work.

Well, those specs finish me off, a grumpy old codger who has played civ since the original game on the amiga. I used to be content in the knowledge that with no interest whatsoever in action shoot -em ups, etc, I would always be able to play the two brain- engaging games worth spending time on - ie civ and the now rebranded football manager - on my laptop (which does have a dedicated 3d graphics card., just not one up to these specs). Neither expected high performance to be able to run.

I would have guessed that fair proportion of the market for the civ franchise was people like me who know that we don't need a state of the art bells and whistles machine to do everything else we want to do with a computer, and don't see the point of spending lots of money just to run teenager's games. I know the processor and memory specs are perfectly reasonable for most machines, but the graphics card issue is going to hit the minority.

Anyway, I think i'm going to buy an i-mac next time. Wonder if civ 4 will be ported across.

btw I'm very uneasy about the new 3d graphics. Anyone else worried that zooming perspective images make it harder, not easier, to see what's going on around the civworld?

                              i'm off to sulk
