Different genres, too. RTS will always stay different from TBS, and at that, Age of Empires is even not among the strategically complex RTS games, such as RoN or EE2.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

If you want great graphics but no content, play AoE.
If you want great, deep gameplay, play RoN or GalCiv or CtP2 or hopefully Civ4...

For those who think graphics do not make the game - that is your opinion.
For many, graphics helps to make the game better, thats why companies continue to make games with better graphics.
And Civilization can have graphics like AoEIII, it's just that no one is daring to take up the challenge. This is something only Peter Molyneux would dare to do.
