Call To Power 2 Cradle 3+ mod in progress: https://apolyton.net/forum/other-games/call-to-power-2/ctp2-creation/9437883-making-cradle-3-fully-compatible-with-the-apolyton-edition
As reported by Strategy Informer, Firaxis requires a 64 MB video card for Pirates, I'm guessing you only have 32...
Nope, 64 MB Geforce 2... That's why I think that perhaps the game requires a 128 MB videocard to run smoothly.
I don't think 1 GHz, 256 MB and a 64 MB video card (~GeForce 3 or higher) is particularly demanding (= the specs for Pirates). My PC is currently 3 years old and I haven't upgraded since I bought it, but even I meet those specs easily (2 GHz, 512 MB, Gefore 4 MX 64 MB -- I deliberately bought an el cheapo graphics card at first because I knew I wouldn't need a better one for at least 3 years; only now with R:TW and Civ4 in the picture am I starting to look for an upgrade). Sure, it ain't no CtP2 or Civ3, but as I said those were game that were released around 2001, Civ4 is aiming at 2006. Even RoN (almost 3 years old when Civ4 hits the stores) requires 500 MHz/128 MB RAM + 16 MB GFX, and that game was remarkable for it's low minimum specs for an RTS (and esp. good performance at those specs). E.g. Command & Conquer: Generals was released only a few months after RoN but requires 800 Ghz/128+32 MB (and it only runs properly on a system with twice those numbers).
I agree with you that 1 GHz, 256 MB and a 64 MB videocard is not particularly demanding, especially for this day and age. That's why I don't understand why Pirates has a bad perfomance on my system, after all I'm slightly above the minimum requirements. This could indicate that the minimum requirements both for Pirates and for Civ4 (which are, after all, based on the same gfx engine) are just the minimum necessary for the games to run. Running smoothly is another thing.
I just happen to think that a turn-based strategy game should not have high system requirements at all. RoN and C&C:G are both RTS games, so they cannot be compared with a game like Civ. And the reason why RoN was not so demanding in terms of equipment, IMO, is that it wasn't totally a 3D game, contrary to C&C:G, which was totally in 3D (AFAIK, I haven't played C&C).

No, probably just something newer than Geforce2. As you can see on Tom's Hardware Guide, even crappy Geforce4 cards performe 2-4 times better than your Geforce2. Geforce2 is just too damn old
I think/hope the same will go for Civ4. But we'll just have to wait and see...
In case you're wondering Sn00py or anybody else, yes the Civilization IV screenshots that were made available for viewing/downloading in this thread have been removed by the Apolyton administration, myself specifically.

And neither do we -- we share your concern.
Talking about the screenshots, posting small pieces of the screeenshots or excerpts from the full text from this or any other printed-only article is acceptable unless otherwise informed by its publishers. However, scanning complete copies of some or all of the screenshots and reproducing the entire article text by typing, scanning or otherwise is not permitted here unless express, written permission is obtained from the publisher and presented to and verified by the Apolyton administration in advance.

Can I just also say now, while Firaxis may be listening.
The map-generator Firaxis. Make sure mountains come in ranges. Mountains don't pop up here and there with no reason.
Ive already complained about that and I hope they do.
Plus you may be right on the Roman thing, the red one on screenshot2 reminds me of the Polish Eagle too, but then it looks like its on the blue one too.
