    Good move

His contract is actually for 900K but he gets an extra 212 for any four of a list of six targets (they include scoring 20-- getting .73 PPG, playiong top 6 minutes over at least a 42 game stretch and a few more. Then the rest comes if he does something ridiculous like wins the Hart or Art Ross of makes the first or second allstar teams

Also its a 2 way contract so they can send him to the minors.

Depends on the team-- at the deadline with just a little of his contract left, the numbers don't matter as much.

Also you compare Burrows and Iggy as if they were in comparable roles and with comparable quality linemates, which is obviously not the case.

Iggy was the clear sniper for the Flames and as such attracted all the attention from the best shut down guys. A lack of scoring from the rest of the lineup hurt him here

Burrows gets good minutes with far better linemates but the docus of the shut down guys will usually be the Sedins.

IN Iggy you have a guy that has produced consistently -- With top linemates its arguable and forseeable that his production would be higher than as as the single gun the Flames have

Black Hawks got rid of the assistant coach in charge of power play yesterday. No real surprise there. Heard Quenville said, "I've been watching lots of playoff games and I still have a lot to learn." Good to know he is thinking that way.

I think it is a sign that the Flames want to 'rebuild' on the Leafs model.

Iggy is by no means overpriced, Ben.
    You're paying a 25 goal scorer at 34, 7 million dollars a year on a perpetual non-playoff team. Why?

    For a team
    1. looking to win right now and not wanting a long term obligation OR
    2. where the actual dollars matter and the cap hit is less relevent
If this strategy were beneficial to 'winning now', why is it that the Flames remain mired out of the playoffs. This strategy worked 10 years ago with a young Iggy and young Kipper when they were cheap, and you could afford the pieces needed to build around them.

Now? Hanging onto both of them as they hit their decline phase will doom the Flames until their contracts come due and they need to rebuild. I said that last year was Iggy's last hurrah, and that his value would never be higher than it was then.

Where the **** do you even get this ****?

How is Iggy a 25 goal scorer when WE JUST HAVE ESTABLISHED he has scored 30+ goals for 11 (nearly 13) consecutive seasons?

    You're such an idiot.

So the fact that I correctly predicted Iggy's temporary blip last year was just that makes me ignorant?

What the **** kind of idiot calls 11 seasons of 30+ goals a temporary blip?

Further, I don't recall you predicting anything of the sort. Link it.

Apparently, Washington just traded the rights to Vokoun to Pittsburgh and he signed a 2 year deal. Pretty good backup.

re Thomas taking a year off

We may see what the real value of cap dollars is.

Thomas is an over-35 contract. He has a $5 MM cap hit. He is paid nothing if he does not play, but counts against the cap regardless. For a team on a budget that needs to make the cap floor (Phoenix) his contract is $5 MM in the bank for the owner.

I don't blame Edmonton for taking Yakupov first overall, but I am reminded how I wasn't too excited when they "won" the lottery to move up from 2nd. I hope I am wrong, but I think if you ask me 5 years from now, I will be wishing they took a Defenseman in the first round, even if it meant trading down to do it. It's ironic that in a year with awesome defensive depth that a team badly in need of a top defenseman ended out picking first and takes the "automatic" first overall pick who is a forward.

Oh well, probably better to sign an NHL ready defenseman anyway....time to check who's coming available for Free Agency!

Probably the smartest move for Edmonton anyway. They can always turn around and trade Yakupov, who seemed to be pretty much the consensus #1 pick, or another one of the young phenoms for a decent D-man. Better than taking a flyer on some kid who may not be ready for NHL-level work for a few years. But I think they'd better work their butts off to make a trade like that.

The Oilers may have blown the 32nd pick. They took a player from the junior team that they own. There were more talented, higher rated players available. Either they know things that others do not, they have the opportunity to push the kid and tailor his junior experience to suit the goal of nurturing an NHL player, or they blew the best pick they had (other than the obvious one which is a no-brainer).

But, we won't know for several years.

The early 30s are essentially 1st round picks (you can often get players who were rated first round).

    Why?

Honestly, never heard of the guy before last week and was genuinely not interested at all in signing him given I heard so many teams are after him. From what I hear the Flames didn't offer very much and weren't even on the shortlist.

$3.7M cap hit before he plays his first game in the NHL. It's just stupid.

The Oilers will get burned, just like all of the other teams who competed for and overpaid some young rookie free-agent.

I would truly be upset if Feaster signed this kid for that much of a hit.

    Feeling the luv, Asher.

Ironic. Apparently, the Ducks picked Schultz with one of the picks they got from the Oilers in the Penner offersheet fracas.

    For you, Asher.

Let's keep in mind Schultz hasn't played a minute in the NHL and that he's not going to step in and provide all the answers to the questions about the Oilers defensive corps. In the fold or not, Tambellini still has plenty of work to do to bolster a blue line that isn’t good enough or deep enough. Still, getting his name on a contract, landing a highly prized free agent, would be a big box checked off on Tambellini's To-Do List.

That's pretty much my thinking as well.

The significant thing is that the player chose the Oilers when he had 20 or more other teams where he could have the same contract.
