  • Yeah, but I think games like NWN and MW are head and shoulders above games like Daggerfall or early M&Ms, not only in interface and graphics terms, but as games in their own right as well. While no recent game I can think of compares to either moo in any other term but eye candy. I wonder why that's so.

Is there some intrinsic reason RPGs have progressed while 4Xs haven't? I'd be happy to know.

    • I would suggest that it is due to fact that stategy is harder to improve than RPG. I have gone back to MM6 far more often than Diablo2. I never finished either BG or BG2 or any of the Fallout games, but have finished MM6/7/8 many times. So far none of the RTS games have made me forget Command and Conquer or Warcraft2. I may have to change that once I get into WC3. I wonder if the reason is that they all rehase the originals. Daggerfall was so far back that even MM6 looks pretty next to it, but better looks can not carry the day. It is not just nostalgia as Moo2 has now moved pat Moo for me (never thought that could happen). I will see how candy fares when I get Dungeon Oddessy from Aaron Hall via Shrapnel Games. You know him, he did Space Empires.

      • Well I played WC3 multi one night at a "LAN party" and it is a true member of the genre. Much more eye candy and some nice specials, but still one with "fastest mouse arm" won. Haven't played single campaigns as my computer is way too slow(PII450), but I don't think that WC3 makes you forget C&C or WC2.

Back to "strategy vs. RPG", I think it's mostly due to fact that RPG games have fared much more better in the sales than any strategy game. Publishers can give more time(= money) to designers to finish the RPG game than the strategy game just because they know that RPG makes money. Simple, C&C sold well so everybody started making RTSs. Diablo2, BG, Fallout sold well so everybody started making RPGs. Maybe if MOO3 sells well...

                  • I have not figured out how to even fight and was beset by about 9 monsters in the first seconds on novice level. I have asked Aaron for a readme to give us the commands. I tried mouse, arrows and some keys, but action.Moving was via mouse.

You can choose Feudalism and spy abilities as a minus (won't hit that much) furthermore creative is always a good bet to lead the tech-race and that's ultra important in this game.

I am not sure of the context for this, but I strongly suggest that Feudalism is one of the deadly picks. It and Uncreative are the worst picks in the game. That is not to say you can not select one and win, but they will hurt you. I would say they will stop you from winning in an MP game.

                          • What about your ship designs?

I read "lasers" mentioned a couple times here. So you guys using autofire lasers instead of mass drivers? Is that somehow a lot better?

                            • Maxed out lasers are good at times and it allows you to choose shields, instead of Mass Drivers. Watch out for some of the advice as it is to viewed in the light of not having Creative and hence many techs are not available to them.

Hv Af Mass Drivers are way better than Hv fully modded Laser beams. You should try comparing them against a BB with Zortium.
