  • LittleBigPlanet is getting 90-100% reviews

The first genuinely must-own PS3 game.

    Metareviews thus far:

    * PlayStation Official Magazine UK (100/100): "There simply isn't anything else like LBP on any system, anywhere. It's a beautifully elegant and powerful creative tool that puts unlimited potential in the palm of your hand."
    * CVG (96/100): "You'll look for inspiration for levels, mechanical dilemmas or puzzles in every corner of your life. And in your sleep. It will take over your conversations with fellow players. You will become obsessed. You have been warned."
    * IGN (95/100): "Media Molecule has created a brilliant platformer, and then given you the tools to recreate the whole thing over again, or better yet, to create your own ideas from scratch. It's not perfect - the controls could be tighter, automatically shifting between planes can be problematic, the editor isn't quite as robust as you might hope - but what's there is nothing short of astounding."
    * Eurogamer (90/100): "The promise that anyone could create something simple and fun and personal with LittleBigPlanet hasn't come true. In a way, it's the opposite of Spore, which makes it easy and fun for every single player to have creative input, but doesn't let any of them change the fabric of the game. LittleBigPlanet lets them run wild, with unprecedented results, but it locks the majority out of the creative process, because it's time-consuming and simply not very enjoyable."
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "

So basically LBP merged with Spore would be an awesome game?

      Made in the UK right?

The game looked pretty cool, but I'll only play it on the PC.

what is it, some kind of lemmings game ?
Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

We own a blue ray player PS3, and they have released dozens of promotional videos for this thing. I have watched them all, and I still can't figure out what it is....

Really don't know if the kids will understand/enjoy it or not. But, it's on the radar for Christmas. How/when/where is all this supposed user created content going to be passed around, or will new levels be released in the store regularly? Stuff like that is my last sticking point.

It's a platformer where you design your own levels. Very powerful. Check out the videos on youtube.

Granted the create your own level feature is a new and unique addition but i don't see anything seperating the gameplay from any other platformer

Sooo, basically it's a modding game? That's interesting, I guess, but not mind-bogglingly-amazing...

You're both missing the point completely. Again, look at some of the videos.

Someone has even made a fully functional computer using in-game objects.

It's a very social game as well. It's hard to describe, because it's truly unique.

                  The computer:

I love the idea of using what is essentially a super-computer to do basic arithmetic. This game looks cool, but odds are you'll have a relatively small number of fun levels and a heaping pile of crap.

The beta's had a ton of people in it and apparently there's a massive amount of fun levels.

                        WHERE?

That's my biggest question. Where and how is all this stuff going to be released? The PSN isn't exactly a model of social networking, and Home is a pipe dream. The game's internal system, perhaps, which brings up the question of fees...

I'm also mildly concerned about content I wouldn't want the kids accessing, and how they'ld regulate that kind of thing, but that's a whole other topic.

This is the kind of game that makes me instantly suspicious. I'm intrigued enough to check out some youtube vids though.

You access them from within LBP, they have dedicated servers for it. There's no fees at all for it.

And yeah, content is not regulated...

I've watched a few vids and it's rather intriguing - clearly a step up from the Sims and Spore etc.

I do wonder about longevity even with the obvious creative depth the game has though. The physics are impressive but the gameplay is still pretty simplistic at its core.

I'd imagine it will be very popular though, and sure to feature in game of the year lists for its creativity alone.
