I guess a military type would be ok, say your a boot soldier...basic archer or what have you and have to earn gold to buy armor or a sword...to advance

    Just looking for possibilities..thanks Snoopy369!
Different than Sim City, but by the same company. More info:

YES, wait for it, I forgot about that one while trying to think of some games for you.

I am definitely looking forward to it. Check out the vids in the Fallout3 thread if you want more info.

          Thanks FrostyBoy

Actually, after reading Solvers suggestion, I went and read the thread.

I will view the Vid's later, but seemed to catch my interest.

Gramps, Fallout 3 coming out next month is precisely why I recommended Fallout now. It's a good time to play those games. Fallout 3 will be different but probably still the same in many ways. I'm hoping myself to have another playthrough of Fallout 2 until the next month's release if I have the time. I just hope you aren't easily scared away by bad graphics, it's a decade old after all. Also lacks some convenience in the interface that you'd be used to from modern games, but it's outstanding as a game nonetheless.

Upon further consideration, modded Morrowind might also work for you. There are thousands of mods and hundreds of good mods. People have modded lots of stuff in. The original game doesn't really let you do what you want but there are mods that, for example, allow you to get a farm and grow your own food there for sale, mods that make sure you're not swimming in money very soon, etc. It's still fantasy and more "heroic" than Fallout, though.

Fallout 2 was no where to be found

Call of Cthulhu, perhaps? You're a detective, doing detectivey things for the first quarter of the game. It is pretty difficult, though.

And I agree, I've had enough of fantasy.
                        ?

Yeah thats why i play modded morrowind - you can get rid of all the fancy magical spell effects(no-glo mod), increase the difficulty of hand to hand combat, and add more realistic real world weapons. Change the look of the landscape so it looks more like a medieval/european landmass. And a thousand other things. Ok it still has elves etc.

AR is the most un-fantasy rpg around - you are a modern day human(no magic) kidnapped by aliens sent to another reality and have to find your way back. If anything it's a survival game more than anything. It does have trappings of ye olde fantasy type, but also alien tech if you search hard enough. It's what the film the Matrix was based on(apparantly).

Realms of Arkania is fantasy, but has such good char gen you can work without magic users(I tend to go with a healer/druid as my only magic element, then warriors/hunters/rogues for the main). This is not DnD. None of my list is like DnD, which is why i recomended them.

But if this is strict non-fantasy/non lord of the rings influenced stuff, Then Fallout 1+2, Alien Logic, BAT 1+2, Autoduel, Captive 1+2, Hard Nova, MegaTraveller 1+2, Planets Edge etc. there are hundreds of non fantasy rpg's out there

It comes with fallout tactics also, which has a bad rep, but fallout 1 and 2 for $20 is still a good thing, IMO. I'm sure you might be able to locate it somewhere else online for cheaper, but I doubt you can still buy at any retail store.

                              Wow!

I just played 2 straight hours and am very impressed, my first ever MMORPG (if thats what you call it)

I was simply in awe just starting to learn

I am so green not funny, but practice makes perfect, its simply awesome, pretty much exactly what i was looking for.

Of course, I did "mention" to my sweetheart about Fallout 3 coming out and she told me since i hadnt bought many games this year, it was fine when it came out!

I will be playing Colonization and then Guild Wars prettty much on rotation for awhile now

I will keep you folks posted but very nice environment

Ahh I remember my first MMORPG.

I wonder how long it will take before reality hits you. For some its short, others very long, some are still recovering, ...many are still playing.

Fallout 3 will fit you nicely, with you being all patriotic and stuff.
