Well, I don't think the hardcore/casual gamer thing is as simple as a dictionary definition- it's jargon and has a specific meaning among gamers.

True, you can be "hardcore" about playing solitaire or monopoly... but that doesn't make you a "hardcore gamer".

Whether you and DrSpike choose to define the word differently from the rest of the world is your own prerogative, but don't "correct" people who use the word as it is meant to be used.

It's Jargon. That's the very definition of "defined differently from how the rest of the world" perceives a word.

If we're referring to something in a computer game sense, it is assumed we will be utilizing Jargon rather than the "usual definitions."

if you just play alot of games for long time you are not hardcore to me. you might be addicted to gaming but I wouldnt necessary call that person a hardcore player.

I see harcore as the type of people that would get real technical over game's mechanic and bring the gameplay to another level.

...By asher's argument- people addicted to Solitaire or Bejeweled are hardcore rather than casual gamers.

In my definition, if they are losing sleep and playing 24/7 NO. If they are obsessed with playing the perfect game or finding out the game mechanic's intricacy, then YES

although, generally those people DO play 24/7 anyway. Quanitity of playing time is a corelation in this case not a causation of harcore playing.

I dont really think there is a clear distinction between hardcore and casual game like drspike does. Pretty much anything can be taken to a hardcore level. Although I would agree that most games labeled by drspike tends to be flooded by casual type of players, since it is catered to them.

Zero- that's more the sort of definition I was getting at as assuming would be more correct. I do agree.

Also, some hardcore players (by my definition) dont really play alot as one would think.

Take for instance, WoW for me. When I was noob I used to play alot. I was obsessed with the MMO enviornment (having been my first MMO) and playing at work as much as I can as well.

Now I play like 2-6 hrs a week at most doing arena. Some months even cancelling subscriptions. Though I don't really think I would be called less harcore wow player because I do.

So while I think asher has a point by saying according to his definition, playing alot is what constitutes being hardcore for him, I would say most people would think otherwise.

So people who play Cooking Mama 40 hours a week are hardcore gamers?

They're sure as hell not sane.

                      And yeah, they're hardcore gamers.

You would seriously say someone is a casual gamer if they play 40 hours a week?

I think the lot of you have lost sight what the word means. Casual/hardcore refers solely to the amount of time one devotes to a certain activity. The fact that most "casual" games like Cooking Mama have the depth of a wading pool and this mean no one plays them to the same level as WoW or Civ or whatnot, it doesn't mean that if somebody plays lots of anything they're no longer "casual".

                      Period.

I'd love to continue this discussion of remedial english with a bunch of arts students, but my time is too valuable and my faith in humanity is so weak right now that I cannot continue.

I have heard that 10 hours a week is still a hardcore gamer.

Probably you have to get down to 10 hours a month or something to be a casual gamer.

what the heck is cooking mama.

I have heard that 10 hours a week is still a hardcore gamer.

well I play way less than that. BUT if you add the time I spend talking/thinking/discussing about the game.... and watching matches of other people playing, I guess now that would be a different story.

8hr workday and I barely do any work.... so count the time I youtube starcraft matches and browsing arena junkies too and I guess I meet my quota of 10hrs a week easily.

The long and short of it was DrSpike was wrong to correct me.

I'd cockslap him if his face wasn't covered in cold sores.
