  • 360: What to get?

    It seems I've unexpectedly become the owner of an XBox360...now what? I haven't been paying attention to console gaming for a while now since I figured I'd be sitting this generation out. Are there any good RPGs, or are they all still Playstation titles? I saw Fable II and Mass Effect, both of which look interesting. Strategy? CivRev looks like it took out all the parts of Civ that I actually liked. Is it worth buying a wireless bridge for Live, or paying for the upgraded service? What else do I need to know?

    good ventilation!!(serious)

    games wise Mass Effect is a good choice rpg wise, atleast my 360 buddy enthused about it for a few weeks(a good sign for a console!).

    If you want to spend lots of money then Live is a good choice and you get to try the more interesting titles on XBLA etc.

    try a site like metacritic to get a good overall picture on what games got rated well across the board:

    Metacritic aggregates music, game, tv, and movie reviews from the leading critics. Only Metacritic.com uses METASCORES, which let you know at a glance how each item was reviewed.

    shame they cut the price for a 360 so much recently otherwise I might have suggested ebay

      You want to be connected to the net for updates and demos and dlc.

      Only pay for live if you want play mp online, otherwise unnecessary.

      If you like rpgs, this is a good time to come into a 360:
      Tales of Vesperia just game out, same with Infinite Undiscovery-I haven't played either, no time til november I'm afraid.
      Fable2
      Blue Dragon you can find for probably 10-15$, jrpg much better than the demo.
      Lost Odyssey

      My favorite 360 games are:
      Dead Rising
      Mass Effect
      Crackdown

          Play it. Did you buy it due to the pricecut? If so that's pretty quick...

          Almost all of the next-gen RPGs are actually 360 titles.

          Sorted list of 360 RPG reviews on IGN.

          I saw Fable II and Mass Effect, both of which look interesting.
          Fable II isn't out yet but looks interesting, Mass Effect is great.

          Strategy? CivRev looks like it took out all the parts of Civ that I actually liked.
          Strategy reviews sorted by scores on IGN.

          There's not many strategy games on consoles.

          Unless you're going to be playing games online, you don't need to pay for Xbox Live Gold. But being online at least semi-regularly is good for updates, demos, Xbox Live Aracade downloads, etc. One thing you may be surprised at is how many good XBLA games there are and how quick you accumulate a collection.

            Hmm, hadn't thought about that...are the cooling problems really as bad as the Mass Hysteria reports say, or is it just an excuse to sell you a giant external fan?

            Sort of...I got a Wii as a gift, but I didn't see many games I was interested in so the price cut allowed me to switch.

            Yeah, hopefully. The only thing that might have convinced me to keep the Wii is virtual console, so it would be nice if XBLA could partially replace that. But I figured it wasn't worth keeping the Wii just to play games I can probably emulate anyway.

              RPGs:

              Mass Effect
              Tales of Vesperia
              Lost Odyssey

              The others aren't much cop.

              Don't buy CivRev if you have a PC because it's really awful to any real civver.

              Xbox Live is worth it if you play online a decent amount (if not a silver account gives you everything but online play), but the wireless bridge is a rip - you can get better non-MS ones for a fraction of the price.

                Well yeah, I was just going to use a cheap router with DD-WRT. Just wasn't sure if the online connection was necessary enough to do even that.

                  You can probably get an ethernet bridge for pretty cheap also.

                    It is pretty important. Without a connection you cannot:

                    Upload times to leaderboards (for racing games)
                    Upload scores to leaderboards (for lots of games)
                    Download demos or movies
                    Play MP (obviously)
                    Download Arcade games (though not that many are worth downloading)
                    See how much better at games you are than Asher.

                        Achievements do not dictate how good one is at a game, it's more of a representation of their attention span and dedication to a game. For instance, DrSpike has 1000 points in Forza 2 which is absolutely pathetic as it's a ridiculous game for achievements.

                        For me it demonstrates I get a lot of games. play them once, then move on. For the economically disadvantaged people such as DrSpike, they play the freebie bundled games to death only.

                          Actually I agree achievements don't count for much - but the dedication does. Real gamers find games that resonate with them, like Forza, which has depth and replayability in spades, and attempt to take it to the highest level they can.

                          Casual gamers are constantly shifting on a whim. At the end of the day you aren't really much removed from the Wii shovelware lovers you despise.

                            Best Games on XBox 360

                            * Bioshock! (atmospheric, story-driven, rpg-like shooter... if you can make it past the gruesome first level, it's a nice horror game)
                            * Mass Effect
                            * Halo 3 (For Multi-Player)
                            * Call of Duty 4 (For Multi-Player)

                            okay
                            * Dead Rising. (nice storyline. Takes a bunch of skill though.)

                            Over-Hyped
                            * Assassin's Creed... Every ...level ...is ...the ... same... thing.
                            * Blue Dragon (Yawn RPG)
                            * Devil May Cry 4... (Okay... but repetitive.)

                              If I'm a casual gamer, why do I have more points than you?

                              Don't play games with me. You're an economist and I'm not, which means I've got a tremendous intellectual advantage on you. This just isn't fair.
