So in that case then people that play a lot of Mario Party and other games you dismiss on the Wii as shovelware casual games, are actually hardcore gamers.

So I suppose with such a flawed metric, you would also be classified as a hardcore gamer.

For me I look for some evidence of actual achievement or skill with games, before applying a casual or hardcore label.

DrSpike: Skill does not play into casual gamer definitions...it's purely how much they game.

Somebody could play Mario Party alone 10 hours a day, which would disqualify them from being a casual gamer...

So next time you are waxing lyrical about casual Wii gamers destroying gaming, I will expect to see a caveat around hardcore Wii gamers who play lots of Mario Party.

People who play that 10 hours a day do not exist. So nice try.

They could play several Wii games you dismiss as casual gamers shovelware, to the same degree you play 360 games. Then you would either both be hardcore gamers, or both casual gamers.

If they play games as much as I do, they are not casual gamers.

I'm not sure why you're having a hard time getting your head around this.

Oh I understand your position perfectly - it just isn't very sound for several easons.

I can't believe you wish to define "casual" gamers by skill level rather than frequency they play.

You're quite simply being retarded. No other way to put it.

                    Go read some Adam Smith.

Some measure of skill or actual achievement would be part of a sensible metric yes. Purely basing it on time played is flawed because someone who spends, say, the time you spend on your 360, but plays purely casual games or only games on easy difficulty, is not a hardcore gamer.

                        You're flat out wrong.

"Casual" clearly refers to their dedication to it, not their skill in it. Similarly, a casual poster to this forum may be a person who may make the best post EVAR when they post, but post only a few times a month.

I am so right here it hurts. In a good way.

...By asher's argument- people addicted to Solitaire or Bejeweled are hardcore rather than casual gamers.

I think there's more to the definition than the amount of time put into a game.

Spike is closer to being right by defining it as skill based- a hardcore gamer gets into the "mind" of the games... which often takes time...

But there's more to the definition of hardcore gamer than that- a person who plays a number of games and analyzes them and beats them is more hardcore than someone who just plays a lot of games and dabbles.

If somebody plays solitaire 20-30 hours a week, that's not a casual player.

I strongly suggest the lot of you consult an english dictionary.
