  • Texas Gamer: Wii games are a wee bit too tame

12:00 AM CST on Saturday, November 22, 2008

    Victor Godinez vgodinez@dallasnews.com

The Nintendo Wii is finally becoming a bit easier to find on store shelves.

Hard-core players, however, are deciding they're no longer interested.

It's a shift that Nintendo seems to be aware of and, contrary to what many gamers think, not all that happy about.

Among the crowd that favors gritty, violent, intense and complex games such as Grand Theft Auto 4, Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead and Dead Space, the Wii is increasingly seen as a platform cluttered with cutesy games for kids and low-quality imitations of the more mature titles.

While that's an oversimplification – there are several big-budget, unapologetic, mature-rated games on the Wii such as Resident Evil 4 and the upcoming MadWorld – it's true that the Wii's biggest hits are somewhat safe.

Super Mario Galaxy, Animal Crossing, Wii Fit, Wii Play and the ubiquitous Wii Sports are about as edgy as macaroni and cheese.

Of course, those are all games made by Nintendo, and Nintendo has always focused on excellent, family-friendly titles.

No, the only Wii games likely to come with a bit more bite are those developed by outside studios, the so-called third-party developers.

But those gritty third-party games on the Wii often are either rehashes of games that first appeared on other consoles (such as Resident Evil 4) or quick cash-ins by studios eager to profit from casual Wii owners who don't know to expect more.

Hard-core gamers know, though. And so, apparently, does Nintendo.

Speaking to Forbes magazine recently, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said that many third-party developers don't understand that many Wii owners would like to play the same sorts of visceral games that flourish on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

"I will be able to say our licensees 'get it' when their very best content is on our platform," Mr. Fils-Aime said. "And with very few exceptions today, that's not the case."

In other words, too many third-party developers are dumping half-baked software on the Wii just to make a quick buck.

On the surface, it certainly seems odd that the best-selling console in the world doesn't get the best programming teams.

But I think most game creators got into the industry in the hopes of writing the next Doom or Halo or Command & Conquer and not the next Hannah Montana video game adaptation. So the best game makers gravitate to the consoles that seem to specialize in the kinds of games they like.

Nintendo bears some responsibility here, as well.

The Wii is the least powerful of the three current consoles, and you simply cannot easily duplicate a high-end Xbox 360 or PS3 game on the Wii.

Dead Rising on the Xbox 360, for example, was fun and amazing in part because there were often hundreds of zombies on the screen at one time, each shambling toward your brain.

The Wii version under development, though, is limited to a dozen or so monsters on the screen simultaneously, and the downgrade makes the game seem kind of pointless.

But Nintendo chose to go down this path of less-powerful, lost-cost hardware, and one side effect of that decision is that some games simply cannot be ported over.

So as much as developers do need to step up their efforts, Nintendo hasn't done them any favors.
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

No one knows. I'm not going to make a .

I can't answer that from my own experience, not having played them, but from what I've read, its that Wii Sports and Wii Fit were fun and provided unique experiences that Wii Music did not. I've read lots of people both Wii fans and others who would suggest that eplanation, but I'm sure you would discount that based on your own opinion.

      • Mainly complaining about the lack of violent "mature" content, as evidenced by the articles classification of SMG.

And its particularly amusing to see Asher quoting an article, that in listing such content, of three games, Doom, Halo, and Command and Conquer, mentions one, that is primarily a PC title.

        • I'm sure Asher will be excited about this

So, after you've flung mud at Lara Croft for stealing your husband, and gotten everyone to sympathize with you against an actress with a Q score of 24 (no mean feat), what do you do for an encore? Why, you go out and discover the Wii. Jennifer Aniston reveals as much in an interview with The New York Times Magazine…

It doesn't need to be violent.

All three are on the 360. Not sure why this is amusing except for your ignorance.

            • I'm very happy to read that GH - World Tour is also coming out on PS2

I think it must have impacted on Wii music - it offers much more as a game(give me the recording studio!!). Cool - I love my PS2

              • It's funny a year ago you had nothing nice to say about consoles.

                Now you "love your PS2".

I can't wait til you try a real console...that'll be fun.

                • Wait, wasn't there a thing about how Sony's gunning for the PS2 now over the PS3?

I can see the problems with going for a Gamecube or XBox (non-360) now, since they both have younger consoles that are superior in every way. But the PS3 doesn't have backwards compatibility in running PS2 games, and the PS2 had a massively huge game library.

So even if it's not the most powerful, it's still a reasonable step to stick with it. The games are probably cheap now and if you don't have the budget to go for the latest ones the PS2 can tide you over.

                  • I think if you have a PS2 living with it would be ok. Buying one now just looks wrong given that the 360 is so cheap at the moment.

Can you read "primarily"? It was released first on the PC and afterwards for the 360. Unless you have sales figures that contradict it, my assumption is that the PC was the primary platform it was marketed for.

You're a ********, what can I say? I'm getting tired of you not knowing **** but talking about it anyway.

First of all, your statement was as follows:
And its particularly amusing to see Asher quoting an article, that in listing such content, of three games, Doom, Halo, and Command and Conquer, mentions one, that is primarily a PC title.

Aside from the fact that this sentence would fail you from 5th grade grammar due to one of the worst examples of a comma splice I've ever seen, let's discuss the titles:

DOOM was obviously not on the Xbox 360 first, because (AND YOU MAY NOT KNOW THIS, BEING COMPLETELY CLUELESS ABOUT VIDEO GAMES) it is a very old game!

Halo was developed on and released on the 360 first. It took SEVERAL YEARS for it to get ported to the PC.

The latest iteration of Command and Conquer was developed concurrently on both the 360 and PC, and was released within days of eachother on both platforms.

So I ask you -- if you even know -- what exactly was your point? Were you just trying to spam with nonsense to piss me off, or is there some kind of underlying idea that went through your head that you just cannot put to words?

                            • I thought it was pretty clear I was referring to C&C. Sorry if anyone was confused and thought it was a reference to Doom or Halo.

And my impression is that C&C is aimed at the PC market primarily.
